So I ran across an 028av super with electronic something for sale today. Seller wanted $100, but I'm unfamiliar with this saw. Almost ever saw I own is an 0xx series Stihl but they all are newer than this saw. Mine are more square body with a choke, run, kill lever like new saws. Saw has some compression but I did not pull muffler to view piston and cylinder. Seems like alot of people love these old 028s. I know parts can be hard to find for older ones since it appears that this model had several updates. I'm guessing this is a younger saw based on the electric option and not a magneto. I'm not sure I want to buy it if parts are hard to find. I already have a ms260 for $125 lined up. I have have 3 Stihl saws right now, 4th spoken for....but one more cannot hurt....if it works.
If it runs and cuts like it should go for it! And get the 260 for $125 as well. If you decide you don’t need both you should easily be able to double your money on a resale!
I figured most comments would be" Get both.". Will have to see if I can look at the piston and cylinder. The choke, run, kill switch did not go to the kill location....does it not stay there on this saw? I believe if the saw had points then parts and service would be expensive. Being newer version maybe I'll bite.
I have an 028 Super AV that sits on a shelf as a non runner. Needs at least the ignition system (blank on the name at the moment) just used ones available and at the cost to repair, I just bought a new saw that is way more comfortable to run. I understand making something old run again, but I also have a money value to my time. I would much rather put the couple hundred $ on a decent new saw that in reality will out cut and be more comfortable than this oldie and save my time repairing to be in the woods. Also, I am taking a chance on the used parts and may still end up with a dead saw after hours of working on it, so I just leave it on the shelf and keep running my other saws.
I had one given to me as a gift when i was 17. It was November 1985. Mine had the aluminum screw for the air filter cover. Somehow it was accidently run on raw gas and ruined. Wish i still had it though for sentimental value. My late uncle was like the grandfather i never had as he had no children of his own. Ive heard nothing but good things about them. It always started and ran well for me.
I struggle with that, cut or build. I usually use weather as an excuse to be the deciding factor. But when it is cutting to hoard, I’m with you chbryson, I reach for the comfortable and most productive saw...usually.
