300 +Year old tree.

    Saw this on my travels today. Only a sycamore. That's an 8 foot wide bench. Bear with me for pics.

    Wow, that tree was a sapling in 1720. A decent sized tree in 1820. When I see an old tree like that I always think about how life would have looked like back then. How cool it is that it’s never been cut, blown down, burned, diseased and what ever else could happen in 320 years as a tree!

    thats a big sum beech! or in this case a big sum sycamore. And i was impressed with the 4' diameter one they cut down near me recently. Very cool Steve, thanks for sharing! IMG_1772.JPG

    NO WAY! Hand split sycamore!:eek: I may be crazy, but im not that crazy! Its all down and gone from what i could see.

    Very Cool Steve. Thanks for putting that up. Grew up with Sycamores lining the street I lived on. Always took at least three people to stretch around them. Loved playing with the bark they shed all summer.

    That's interesting... Gifford Pinchot, started the US forest service. One of his homes was Grey Towers mansion in PA. They have the Festival of Wood there every year on the grounds and then tours of the old stone mansion. He had a very interesting life. Amazing wood collection.

    Ol Gifford was a pretty amazing man. We have a state park named for him that I spent many a day there fishing and swimming as a kid.
