Had a round from the pile that had a hollow spot in it. After splitting it I grabbed the next round and went to drop it on the rail of the splitter and almost crushed this guy. Must have been hiding in the round. I sent him back under the stacks and kept on splitting.
My SIL and I were splitting some rounds of small, dead stuff that I got from behind here house....and a baby black snake, maybe 9" fell out of a Dogwood round that we split open that had a little 'cave' in the middle. Surprisingly, it didn't get much of a rise out of her; She about goes through the roof if a bug ever gets on her. I grabbed the little feller, tossed him over into the grass, and we continued on....
Good move, save the hungry little guy to gobble up mosquitoes, ticks and all kind of insects. We could use more bug zappers (toads) around here.
In summer 1981 Dad & I unloaded 20 used railroad ties from an old Ford truck with utility box to build steps & terraced walkway next to the little house in their sloped yard at the acreage.One of the ties had a hollow spot & as we drug them out,a huge fat toad crawled out. Almost completely black,just a small amount of dark greenish spots.It had ridden close to 60 miles west from the lumberyard where the ties were purchased.Still don't remember seeing any toads that were bigger since.Who knows where the ties were shipped from & how long he'd been along for the ride....
Get them around the firewood here also swags. They end up out in the woods though as i dont think they are very healthy for the dogs to play with?
I have a nutty corgi will "not" kill them but he'll get them in his mouth and flip them around in the air... We have no idea why, then he'll leave them alone. We gettum by the bucket loads here.
