Good morning folks! Well I got laid off from the job I landed back in Sept. Because its union I chose to stay available for any extra work and have been
working like a rented mule. Although today they told me it was okay to stay home. Who am I to argue? May go outback and cut up some hophornbeam.
Wanted to thank you all for me being able to check in and being tickled by you folks.

Stupid question time...If the lake is frozen, what makes the water conditions vary??

That's a bummer. Glad you have been able to still work some. Hope it is a short lived layoff. Hope you can find something steady.

Clarity varies year to year, and sometime even from the beginning of the season to then end on the same lake.

From year to year it matters how much rain we got and how windy it was in the fall. Last year we had both through late summer into fall. This made the lakes in my area cloudier then normal. It is likely due to some type of algae bloom, as well as stirred up sediment. It is clearing a bit now. Typically I can see a dime on the bottom in 12-14'. Right now I can see egg shells on the bottom in 7'.

These are major factors that impact ice depth. Springs are present on most lakes, and during a winter like this without much cold weather, they can account for pretty big differences in ice thickness.

In large bodies of water currents occur in channels between bays or lakes, and any neck down area or narrows, and over some shoals and reefs. These areas are notorious on some lakes because they seem to claim the most vehicles year over year.

In terms of water depth, the ice is usually thinner in shallow water on lakes under 50' deep. This is because springs near shore are closer to the surface, and the sun penetrates the ice and warms the bottom which can melt the ice from the bottom up.

Many of big lakes with deep water take longer to freeze up. I can be driving the quad on one lake on 5-6" of ice one day, and barely able to walk out, or even get out on some lakes.

Finally, schools of fish congregated in an area have been known to weaker the ice.

    Good morning everyone!!!
