I posted here years ago about my Grandmother In Law, Rest in Peace Jeanne. She called me after she gave a man who said he loved her her credit card number to loan him money (she was 89 years old at the time). I had her call the credit card company that reversed the charge. BUT, they kept calling her. WWW called two of the numbers and got ahold of him (or one of them) and gave him a piece of his mind. The calls stopped. Now my Father's wife has been hit too (she is very recently widowed). She fell for the "I am your computer tech" scam and they got into her computer, and bank accounts, and everything. All right after he died and she's still trying to get my Father's death Certificate and send it to the appropriate places She too went to the banks and they fixed up her accounts, but the scammers still call her INCESSENTLY till this day a couple months later. From several different numbers. Cloned from several states in the US. How Can I help Her?
Buy her one of those can air horns. Blast it into the phone every time they call. She will get 2 maybe 3 calls then they will stop. Just remember not to call her for a week or so after she gets it

While my Mon was still alive, she would get telemarketing calls. I would tell her under no circumstances; no matter how convincing they sound; give out any information. Before you answered the phone, you had no crisis that needed corrective action taken over the phone by giving out personal info. 99's sister worries about things that are small and insignificant until they are the size of a mountain! Yeah, she got the phone call from someone asking "Grandma, can you send some bail money right now so I can get out of jail? (sob, sob) They won't let me go and its not nice here" etc etc. Of course, she had to be talked down from the urge to comply. damm people who are dishonest and deceptive !
And they yell at her and threaten her! I transposed the last 4 digits of my Grandma In Law (she took me in as her own in 1990 before marriage and the call was around 2009'ish) and elderly woman answered the phone. I was SO EXCITED to tell Grandma Jeanne (that was adopted) I found her birth grandparents names from the 1800's!!! She said hello and I told her the good news and she acted funny and sounded funny. I asked her if she felt okay and she questioned me and I told her she sounded different. At this point I was worried so I told her I found who Alfred's parents were and that they were the grandparents of her, her sister and brother. The woman said "I do not have a brother". I apologized profusely and looked at what I dialed after we hung up. I had dialed the last 4 digits wrong, 9134 instead of 9143 in my excitement. Still scares me that when that other grandma answered and I said "Grandma, Guess What!?!" she answered "what honey?" . Just makes me sick these aholes from foreign countries preying on our seniors, even worse, those in the US doing it WWW has called 2 numbers so far for my fathers wife, both "not available". Verizon advised to block the numbers (as Eric WV pointed out in another thread) they change phone numbers. So not much help. They also said to call the local police. I did that for her, they have no harassment dept. and said likely from overseas. Yoops, Dave, it's just so hard to tell women to not worry about insignificant things. Yes, coming from one similar Let' just chalk it up to Hunters and Gatherers?
I am very, very fortunate that my mother is skeptical of all phone calls asking for something. Her favourite are the Revenue Canada phone calls threatening to send the RCMP about her unpaid taxes. Her reply - Go for it. She is very aware of her financial situation.
I wish there was something I could do. Not only for her, but for everyone. It would be nice to end this plague!
A boss I used to work got,a very intelligent guy and a psychiatrist to boot called me at the office one day and he got one of those calls I am in jail in (add country) one day he just happened to call me to check in and just mentioned it in passing. He mentioned he was on his way to the bank. I told him to hit the brakes, don't go to the bank and it was a scam. He had no idea. With in the last 6 months I had a call for back taxes. I just played along as the day before a police captain got the same call and she had it loud speaker and had video taped it and I had seen it.
And the latest is the Fed Ex scam. They are doing it via text message. Here is an example: For sure, do not click on that link!
