That’s in the middle of the road in downtown of the city! A lotta beer drank over the last few days for sure!
A couple of more pics. Who doesn’t love snow pics! A few gas stores opened. 1.5 hr wait apparently. Supposed to only sell gas haha. One of the ocean as well. We are right on the ocean(most easterly point in North America) so we’ve had massive swell, 10-15 metre
that's because its canada. they are almost all super nice up there. the ones that aren't nice, are usually sorry about it.
How much of a remote population is there? Could be a real problem. At least in town there is strength in numbers! Hope the sanitation/infrastructure sys keeps functioning. Any more pics of the angry ocean? Wow.
the worst of this storm happened to the highest populated areas in the province. So we have the resources and manpower available thankfully. Also the airport as well. The military just arrived with 300 people. I’ll have a look around for more pic of the ocean. I’m out at sea now but it’s hard to see how big waves are with no reference in pics. We had 11-22 metre seas 350 km offshore. Quite typical for the winter months for this area of the North Atlantic. This is a harsh area of the world when it comes to weather.
I know the night of the storm one city had a city water pump fail, haven't heard an update on that for better or worse. Supposed to get another 4 inches tonight, and the winds seem up a bit again. Not like Friday night though. But if the forecast for rain then back below freezing holds true tomorrow, that snow ain't gonna want to move. And at this rate, I don't know if they'll have it cleaned up by then... That is one eerily beautiful picture of the sea out through the narrows though.
Not much here as far as super remote, houses driving distance from each other or what have you (I know some people have different definitions of remote than others). I'm gonna say half, or close enough to it, of the population lives in small communities of hundreds or maybe one thousand range (many bordering each other in clusters). As Steve pointed out, the storm was worst in the most populated, best connected region. That said, on the southeast corner of the island there are a couple areas that are very sparsely populated, a place named st.shott's comes to mind with only 60 odd people, 20 minutes drive in nice weather just to get to a community of hundreds, and much further again to get somewhere with a big brand grocery store or the like. Very barren down there too, little to no trees for shelter. Not a place I'd care to be right now.
I've seen really big storms like that before, but none here near that bad for the last 10-15 yrs. Good thing for me, I couldn't do anything about it except to pay someone to dig us out. We had to hire a front end loader to come in once. Couldn't even see the top of our car. I pray for the safety and lives of our Canadian friends. If they are like me, they need to stay inside and out of the way of those able to deal with it. Doesn't make any sense to just add to their problems.
Those seas look so threatening. The shoreline looks so rocky, I can't imagine there is much erosion, but there will be a lot of stone etc tossed up on shore.
I just read through this whole thread and all I can say is WOW!!! Glad to hear that most are safe. Some amazing pictures, thanks for sharing with us all.
