Mass sucks for the gun laws. Ammo, reloading and some restrictions on firearms. Looks like I'm gonna have to go out of state to get supplies. I'm ok with it, I travel to NH frequently enough. Once I get this reloading thing down I'll be able to buy bulk in one or two trips and be good for the year.
oslo, ( maybe i should call myself castine ) if you are new to reloading you may want to mail order a starter tool kit rcbs is offering a rebate and get a manual or two i would not take any loading data from anyone online except powder companys sites i dont know what you plan to load ( you mentioed 380 ive done it those little cases are hard to handle ) pistol you may want to consider a progressive press ( i have two dillons ) for rifle a single stage would likely do unless you need a lot of the same rounds ( i do 20 - 50 rifle at a time ). i cant speak for the guys in me , they have good places of there own and the nh guys can buy anything anywhere in person or online ( get a friend in nh for mail order stuff ) some folks myself included just dont like the id pollicy at shooters , some dont mind showing there ltc ( hell i should be proud to show it after the mounths and hundreds of dollars , prints pictures to get it ) but there is no law in nh for sales of magazines loading supplies or ammo but shooters requires it for all ( my family has a few properties in nh there is no law against me buying a 11 rd mag and leaving it there but shooters does not care i dont mean to slam the place i just choose not to go there you may love it (ill go there if i decide i need tacticle pants someday ) there is a multi page thing about this on the ne shooters site , check that out , good luck ( i look forward to leaving mass i did i once , moved to louden but could not make anywhere the money i can here so it will have to wait , but i will be back ) hope this helps
I'm wondering if shooters got pinched by Mass authorities? I would think if they are that strict with out of LTC holders then maybe something happened. I can't see why a 11 end mag would get that much attention but now that you bring it up it makes me wonder. I'll find out soon, heading up in a couple weeks.
Just saw this thread. Haven't read it all. But I will. Really interested. I have reloaded for 40 years. 9 mm, 45, 38, 357, 243. I use Unique for all my pistol loads. More later.
From what I understand and have read in my reloading forum titegroup is one of the preferred powders for pistol yet it is hard to come by occasionally.
oslo, i have not heard of them having been pinched ( the same people own a place in manchester with the same policys ) i generaly use uniqe and bullseye powders for pistol and usimg 380 or 38 as an example you will get 2200 shots per pound. approx. i dont really look at gun forums , too much politics ,know it alls and attitude , by the way dont forget the new bass pro in hookset smaller than foxboro but fun to visit, i was surprised they had traps there ( something else we cant use in mass ) i havent typed this much in my life , im a better lurker
Regarding titegroup. ..it's popular but honestly not a great choice for a beginner especially on small cartridges. In your 380 for example, the difference between too low of a charge and too high is a mere .5 grains. It would be VERY easy to overcharge (or under) with titegroup. It's a fast burner compared to others. Other powders will have a larger margin of error and allow more load work up. If you want, send me ur address and I'll send you a lee load manual and a copy of the abcs of reloading for free. Also...could you get a po box across the border for shipping components to? I don't know the rules on it....just an idea.
Yea I said the same on TG. Many use bulls eye for pistol. That was what some of the oldloads for 45acp were designed uusing. It does not take much either. Buddy loads 2.5gn of bulls eye on top of 102gn lead id .380. Clays is another popular and u hear powderpistol as well. Unique i think can go up to almost 4gn based on progectile weight but dont quote me look it up! Titegroup meters well in a powder throw...its small flakes. Unique is a disk powder. Look like little pankakes and it does not meter as reliably. Meaning there is moredeviation in charges. That can be a big problem in the 380 but is not an issue in say 44 mag. Cause iI may only be talking .3 gn but remember the range on a 380 may be 1.5 grain in a 380 with unique and may be 5 grain in a 44
Thanks for response 78, sent you a message . Good idea on the po box, only hitch is I've heard in Mass they require LTC holders signatures upon delivery. Not sure that would work out for hazmat items like powder and primers.
I load for precision rifles...mainly .308win...223rem...and 300 win mag...i love to shoot rifles..lol...if i can be of any help jus ask....thinkn of startin fer the .44 too..lol..sooo many hobbies so little time
I have been searching high and low for some 44mag brass. No go on armslist, and I cant even backorder any from starline! I'm not willing to pay the stupid $35/100 or more from Winchester or Rem. Anyone have any that they want to part with? I can pay $ or trade for some 223, or 9mm. I have about 400 .380 cases also but I gave Oslo first shot at those. If he declines, they are available too. Obviously, the trade would be made fairly ie: not 1 for 1 on my end. Hopefully my pm box fills up! Where's the "holding my breath" smiley?
Bocefus. I think I have a surplus? I need to see if I can part with any. I won several auctions on GB fairly reasonable. I won't 2 auctions for 380 brass now I have over 1000 if I did not have it I would of traded you for some of that. Bit I think I am good now on everything I have. 9mm I almost leave it now I have so much of it. I think I bought some too when I started...regret that now since its everywhere!!! Anybody need brass though I have some calibers I dont load that I could trade. I know I have lots of .40, some .45acp, hundreds of 223/556 and some others I dont remember that I can trade.
I got some good advice on THR recently on my thoughts on a first press, leaning towards the Lee Classic as a starter for a newbie. Lots of people have chimed in and I've been getting some great tips on YouTube as well. I think I'll start learning on 9mm and then work the .380 when I'm more comfortable. Anyone use this press in here?
oslo, the lee should be fine , many people bash lee , i have a few lee items (mostly casting ) and they do there job. the only lee item to watch out for is the scale , i have heard of problems , but have not used one myself. good luck loading , in another thread you mentioned wilson farms , small world i could walk there in 5 mins.
I have the simple cheap $25 lee press the C shape one. I have loaded hundreds of rounds from 380 to 30/06. It works and is fine. I probably would not try to make bench rest ammo on it but it works. My 06 shot 3 through the same hoke with my load using that press and ALL less stuff. I got a buddy that has a dillon 550b press that use to have a lee progressive. Said there fine and work well like all lee stuff just the plastic indexing wears out but the part is like $5. My step dad started about the same time I did and he bought the lee Challenger kit with everything you need its I think the lee breech loading press or the single stage press thats closed on both sides. Its like $130 shipped . Has everything from scale to powder measure I believe? He shoots close to 300 9mm a month no trouble had it over a year.
I just noticed this thread and I'll chime in on reloading a 380. Press is a Hornady LNL AP which I use for both 9mm, 380 & 357 Sig. I have been using Montana Gold bullets for all calibers, 95 gr. FMJ in the 380. Titegroup has been the powder of choice in the 380. Yes it has a small window, 2.7 to 3.2 max. I load 3.0 grs. which chronos 910 FPS out of my PPK/S. It meters very consistently, so close I don't weigh more than 2 per 100 just to stay on top of any measure changes, which has become a non-issue. Nice caliber, wife loves it.
