Good info iowahiker i feel like I have a long way to go in SD. Pretty sure I have enough in the stacks to get through, but might have to make another trip back to the farm in your state to top off the stacks with some shoulder season wood (box elder). Probably should anyway as I don’t have any SS wood at home right now.
Were I live in Ohio 1st part of February is the coldest part of the year traditionally. I doubt that Lake Erie has that much effect when its about 50 mi of mostly woodlands away. And yes the Great Lakes has a major affect on nearby weather.
Around here there are an average of about 7700 heating degree days in a season. Today we are at 3105 compared to the average of 3402 for this date.
I am hoping we are at the 1/2 way point. As near as I can figure I have burnt 1 3/4 to 2 cords. I have 1 1/2 cords up at he house and another cord to bring up yet until I have to get into this years Ash. I'll make it. I will pay the man before I break into last springs Locus, Mulberry and Apple.
Nice to save last years wood but it is painful when you have to pay the power company! Sure do love "Stickin it to The Man"!
Last year my stove did not perform well. MM said wood was high 19s with a few in the lows 20s. Should of been ok to burn. Got into some 2 year maple this year and what a difference. To heck with the MM. It lies. I have about 3/4 of a cord of one year Locus, Mulberry and Apple mix. Should be great when it is 2 years. As much as I hate it I may pay the man late spring or burn this fall and winters css Ash. If needed we will see how that Ash burns. hoping for an early spring. Love stickin the man also.
Just hit the halfway point of the wood that I’ve set aside for this winter (about 4 cords). Usually halfway here is mid-January. This year I’ve stacked it all under the deck right outside the basement door on concrete. Really pleased with the results so far but hoping I don’t have to bring more wood up to the house during mud season.
I didn't do a real good job keeping track of how much I've burned this year...mostly because I don't care and it doesn't matter. I have at least 3 more years worth of wood ready to burn out back. If I had to guess, I'm on pace to burn about 4 cord for the season....and I'm probably not far off. November was below average, December was above, and January is probably right at average temps.
