    I say elm prior to reading all the replies. Ive hand split bigger elm rounds when fresh cut green and frozen and they split easily. Any other time forget it! Stingy as all h@#l. You have hydro so no worries.

    looks like hickory. try to peel off a strip of the bark. if its as hard as the wood is then its hickory.

    It smells bad too and the bark absolutely cannot be peeled off from the edge at all image.jpg

    That first pic in thread almost looks like locust a little no???? But like i said it smells bad. Im only familiar with shag hickory. This stuff is stringy like hickory but when i hit it several times with the fiskars it took my best shots, for a small round i thought that was impressive since im pretty much a beast with a maul :rofl: :lol:

    IMG_1057.JPG IMG_1058.JPG The endgrain fingerprint of any Elm is very distinct. There is a wavy pattern of Parenchyma connecting the small pores in the late wood section of each ring. Very easy to see with just a magnifying glass.

    The rounds in the back of the truck look different from the end cut on that first picture at the top of the post.
    Is that all the same tree. The rounds in the back of the truck look like Elm to me.
