Hope that freezing rain doesn't last too long.

6 and 74 beech in the Fireview. Wife started the heat pump this morning. 62 upstairs was too cold for her. First time this season. Guess I shouldn’t have bragged about not needing it yesterday :picard: 5-9” of snow on tap for tonight and tomorrow morning. Then below zero again through Wednesday.

23 this morning so far small splits of ash and black walnut. Supposed to have the wind pick up and get a couple inches of snow through Monday.

Only ended up getting between 3 and 4 inches of snow. Off and on flurries early this morning and I will go out with the blower later this morning when I know the snow is done. Blowing snow shouldn't bother me much because we are rather sheltered from most of the wind from the north and west. Burning chunks of elm this morning.

In northern MI this is just another task in winter. For those who live in villages, towns or cities, it is a nice job for young boys looking for a few extra dollars; sort of like mowing lawns in summer. The worst we had it was living near Gaylord (snow belt of lower MI). We'd get 200" or more in winter and during late December through mid March, it was at least a weekly job and sometimes more often. We also had heat tapes to keep the ice off the overhangs. That saved the roofs. I remember one time going on top of the house with a scoop shovel and clearing 3' of snow. I'm glad I don't do that any more. Also amazing that recently Gaylord and many areas just are not getting the deeper snows they used to get. Some blame global warming but who knows?

For the first time this year I shoved some snow around. 7" of heavy wet crap. So, when I started, so did the mist. By the time I was done it turned into a light rain. This is not good, but we'll deal with it. Sounds like it will turn cold but back into the 30's within 4 or 5 days.

It was in the upper 20s, snowing and calm this morning when I got to the ice shanty at 7 am, and single digits, partly sunny, with a NW wind gusting to 40mph when I left the lake at 11am. It was nice and toasty in the darkhouse during the maelstrom. I opted for a propane stove because with a small wood burner a guy spends too much time fussing with the stove, and it takes away from time watching for fish.

Nothing was moving until the weather change around 10 am, then had three pike come through within 45 minutes. Took this one for the pan tonight:

Decoy was made by a guy in north central Minnesota. The spear is from a guy in Michigan.

We only got about 4" of snow out of the system but the drifts were pretty good sized out on the lake.

Our neighbor in Hovland MN just let us know they got 16" of lake effect snow, and still coming down there at mid-day.

Man oh man, am I ever getting the snow out there! Went to the cottage and cleaned up there and must have 10" more (since shoveling this morning) since getting back 6 hours ago.

Gonna be a snow day tomorrow one way or another!

6-7" of wet heavy snow this morning. Plowed that off & cleared the deck. Then some rain this afternoon & 38F. Now 23 with a stiff West wind & lake effect snow,2" so far. Nice load of Hard Maple in the boiler.

Getting some howling winds here again tonight with OAT at 33F and dropping. Coals are burning down right now and I'll load it up with an overnight load of Ash before going to bed. Heard a couple of crashes outside so I'll be looking around outside tomorrow morning to see if we lost anything close to the house again. I put about a 1/4 cord of Ash in the woodshed from one across the driveway last weekend.

Gusty and 24. Temps will be low teens in daytime. Have another issue with my damper activating on the boiler. I have placed a thin shim in it to hopefully keep the temperature at a good level overnight, without overheating.

so far keeping house temp up to toasty is doing it.
