    I am proud of him.

First question is.... why is your son allowed to drive to school? Won't the other kids get jealous?

Give him the day off of school! Just call it a "wood day" :D

He done good. Now you need to lock in the deal as quick as possible, if possible. Think how happy that would make him.

Given the apparent based on appearance age of the concrete front steps, the location of the likely planted tree and the propensity for norway maple to be planted at that time and in a location typical, I'd guess norway maple too. Nothing like getting up close and personal to change your mind though.
Norway maple is halfway decent firewood.

EAB killed ash tree. You can tell by the flaking bark on the limbs and water sprouts, very telling of an EAB killed tree.

Go over a “sales pitch” with him explaining to the owner that he was the one who spotted it, and let him see if he can seal the deal. Go with him of course, but let him do the talking.

Glad to see the young man paying attention to what's around him, instead of a video game. Great job. As was stated, let him try to get the wood, in any case, take him to get a treat, ice cream sundae before dinner...

I liked the idea of having my son go ask, but the house never seemed to be occupied. I left a note with my phone number but never heard back, and now the wood is gone... The wood that got away.
On the plus side, I finished splitting that cord or so of locust that I hoarded before the holidays. A bit of stacking left to do, but I’m not about to run out of wood. I thanked my son for keeping an eye out for me.
