Anybody here ever try making their own lump charcoal for grilling? I have plenty of lumps, chips and a burn barrel. YouTube makes it look easy. Why not try?

    Couple of threads around here....
Quick search, disregard the non-lump returns.

    No worries Sluggo :salute:
Just wanted to share what was available. The search tab is easy to overlook. :handshake:

PS- if you click on the search tab, the drop down box appears- click on the “More” button and that takes you to a refined/drill down search page.

I think FatBoy85 has some experience with charcoal making.

Yello. We’ve had nice banter about lump charcoal. Issues I run into are making sure the fire you make in the barrel or outside of it are hot enough so make sure the burn is complete. Sometimes the fire does not stop for several days.

I cut six maple sticks, 3 - 1/2"x 6" and 3 - 1+"x 7", and criss-cross them over a bed of newspaper in my grill (smaller 3 in the lower layer). Light the paper and burn down to coals. Add hamburgers, steak (pork or beef)... and grill to taste.

    I never buy charcoal.

I’m hoping to reach that point. Really it can be done but since I grill year round, I don’t often make enough to last and simply have the charcoal to get it started, then the wood goes on. Feels better doing it in the summertime when there’s more to enjoy, winters here just mostly rain rain rain so it’s not too pleasant.

Ive thought about making my own but a twin double bag from the wholesale club usually lasts most of the Summer. We will grill 2-3 times weekly during warmer months. Keep in mind its just her and i and ill only burn enough coals for what were cooking.
