Looks like a bit of punky sapwood on the outside. How long are you planning to let it dry before you need it?

At least a year if not more. There’s about 1/2” punk on the outside. I knocked off all the bark where I fell it. The inside wood is unbelievable

Yup. Very typical of oak. It is funny though as I've seen people look and then see the punk layer and think that the entire log is ruined. Good! Leave it for me.

Yes, I cut a lot of large red oak rounds out of a tree that was very punky on the outside; the sap wood goes quickly; I was knocking black beetles out. The large chestnut oak that went down in a storm would have been great for the timber mill. I have no way to get the logs skidded out and to the mill though. However, they will keep me warm.

When I checked the moisture on the red oak that had been on the ground for two to three years it was at 30+%

Indeed. Should I see a tree or a decent sized branch on the forest floor, I'll give it a cut through and see what's inside. Usually, good wood in there.

Looks a lot like our Western Cedar after being down awhile, doesn’t it? The older growth tends to really have that dark rich color and the close grain no doubt.

That’s the weird part. It was the sweetest smelling wood I’ve EVER cut. I was real surprised

Thanks, it's all oak, I think that is the weathered end. Logs had been cut for several months before we CSS it. We cut the logs in March '19, CSS in Sept '19... IMG_20190320_172928974.jpg

I had some red oak rounds that I neglected to get to, they were covered in mushrooms. I figured it all was compost. Pleasantly surprised to find out that it was still solid and only the outer 1/2-1" was affected.
