Crazy, SC and NC have come up for relocating with us too. No idea yet but already worried about kiddo switching schools and having to fly to see her Grandma instead of driving.

Well today was productive yet painful but heh have to be positive. Got the cooling tower up on the steel today which meant a pain in the arse over occupied space but we got it done. Not a good ending as the crane blew a hydraulic hose as it was breaking down so it was a pain in the arse as its a big deal when you break a hose and it spews a considered toxic substance 15' away from a storm drain. Was fortune net that it was handled fast and effectively with multiple spill kits but a pain as the crane would be gone 15 minutes later and a day early on schedule. So tomorrow a mechanic is coming to repair it and off it goes but the client was not happy as you would think Chernobyl had just occurred and we were not going to finish a day early . Oh Well

First pic is of the steel going up(one of 2 sections had Pre-fabbed ) and the other of the cooling tower sections as it came as 2 pieces and one of them headed up to the roof along with 16 other picks with associated parts and pieces . Not only did I have to contend with the occupied spaces but in the first pic all those pipes to the right are a main natural gas line that comes in at 275 PSI which would take out half of the building along with rt. 93
That is only a 275 ton crane when i go to set the OAU (outside air unit) I will have to bring in a 500-800 ton crane which takes a day to set up with 16 tractor trailer loads of parts counterweights and various pieces . Can't wait for that day as we will close down all of their loading docks Oh Boy !

A day in the life of Daniel

Luny, I spent 32 years in a manufacturing plant where we generate our own power. Our gas turbine and chillers use cooling towers and I am intimately familiar with the construction and maintenance of them. The first thing I was told when learning how to clean them was to remember that's where Legionnairs Disease comes from. Great. We had all the towers replaced over those 32 years and your pictures brought back memories. I remember that we had, I think, a 300 ton unit come in I believe it was a Grove? That thing was awesome! I can't imagine anything bigger!

I know what you mean. Cranes are crazy expensive. You'd think to lift 100 tons, you'd need a 100 ton crane. But, no. They're rated at vertical lift, 0 inches from the boom which is impossible. They de-rate geometrically with the vertical angle of the boom (distance from crane).

    Yes indeed....
This season has been worrisome to say the least...after losing our supplier of 27 years because of new management with zero feelings towards a long term customer....

The new place seems to be a good deal.

Takes us a bit longer to make the run, but it's not bad (20 miles round trip before and about 40 now) the price was 1.5 cents a pound before and 1.8 cents now.

Actually the new plant prices the stuff at $20 a full tote and we get a tote and half to fill the can up. About 1600 pounds.

The best part is that the folks at the plant are friendly and that is a real plus.

Still, having to dodge the weather is always tedious.....we can't let the stuff get wet.

The shells will mold if we put them up wet... arrrrrrgh

Tell her that's what cars & airplanes are for. And as for the $$$$ issue, that was another one of the reasons I moved here. You's probably faint if I told you how little I pay in taxes here.

Yessir bad stuff (Legionnairs Disease) and a lesson I found out on this job as well not having done much replacement but always new chillers, cooling towers on top of high rise buildings. These were very nasty as they were not maintained well in respect to water treatment and were practically rotten and it was very satisfying when they did not fall apart when hoisted from the original support steel.

ChandleR back then it was probably a Grove which now has been bought out or owned by Manitowoc who also owns Potain which are what you will see as the Luffing tower cranes on top of high rise buildings. They also still make their own crawlers and have dominated the market for many years for crawlers (Lattice boom crawler cranes on tracks )
These cranes are on tracks and have a Lattice tower with an upper boom and they are powerful and can reach , I have seen them with 500' of stick on them between the tower and boom.
    Good stuff
Hopefully brought back some good memories for you.
