    Happy New Year, FHC!

Haven’t had much time to hunt this year so this morning my good bud Tony and I decided to get out to the farm where we have permission to hunt and set up for some geese. Felt so good to be back out and at it. Got our limit and were packing up and I noticed a sizeable pile of locust tossed into the farmers junk lumber pile. Wasn’t over with his other pile of wood that he splits and sells from. He doesn’t burn wood anymore himself. So... Score one for this hoarder! It’s probably a truck load and half. Women if it is buried under snow. Tonys going to double check with the farmer that we can take it and if so we are going to split it and haul it out this coming Saturday. Nice way to kick off the new year!

Good looking wood in the junk pile. Love a good goose field, been a long time since I've gotten to go though... Any jewelry?

Looks like the smaller trailer in the 'junk' pile wouldn't need too much work.

No bands ... Just a nice breakfast of sliced and peppered goose breast, eggs from our chickens and my wife homemade raspberry preserves. Doesn’t get much better than this for breakfast.

    Only the crazies!!

Ice is taking its sweet time to melt here. Just took first walk up to the top of the hill. It’s so much worse up there. Lot more ice. ATV trail is impassible. Lot of damage. Difference of only a couple hundred feet...

Now that's fresh meat! How was it? Could you tell if a young or old bird?

Thin sliced, quick pan sear with cracked black pepper, salt and garlic. So good! Couple adult birds. Couple first or second year birds. Thick down and heavy fat on them. Wonder where they’re visiting from. Limit is two birds each so it was a quick hunt. Called in a group of 9 at 7:55. They circled once to figure the wind, cupped their wings and committed and that was that.

I know this isn’t the “Game Room” forum but here’s the pic -

You got me wanting to get on some birds now... 3 a day here till 14th, then 5 a day jan 15-feb15. I asked about age cause years ago we got 2 one morning...a smaller young bird, and a bigger, older bird. Sliced breasts into about 1/2-3/4 in steaks, marinated and grilled to med rare. Young bird piece was just as good or better than any sirloin steak, older piece took a good bit of gnawing and definitely left something to be desired...

Wild goose must taste a little bit better than farm raised goose.
