    Hey Guys,

    Merry belated Christmas.
I stumbled upon this wood a few days ago.
It was dead, down, and barkless. It was kinda tough on the chains and splits rather tough.
Doesn't smell or look like any red oak I've gathered. The weight is average.
I have no ideal identifying helps such as bark, leaves, twigs, or buds.
    No cambium or sapwood...
Yet, it smells really good and sweet, almost like soap or deodorant!
I've heard everything from yellow locust, cherry, red maple, and the most popular red elm!
    Any ideas?
This was found in north Alabama.
    BTW...moisture reading is great!:D

    Thanks,
    Reggie

Picture 4 says dead red oak to me too.

    Where in North Alabama, about?
I lived and worked in Athens for a couple years.

I'm in the cherry camp. But, I don't know what kinds of trees are common in Alabama.

You're dead on it my friend. This is from west Athens, right before the Rogersville bridge headed towards Lucy's Branch Marina.

    Cool!
I lived on Bream Bluff on the Elk, about a mile or so North of the Coxy store!

I’d agree on the red oak. The stuff I CSS the last few days is the sweetest smelling wood I’ve ever had. I think when the oak dies the smell changes

Yep! Very familiar with it. Tons of my relatives were baptized in the Elk River, and my brother & I have fished the Elk since childhood!:dex:

Nice to make your acquaintance ReggieTsFree :handshake:

No way it’s any kind of oak.
    No medullary rays evident.
I see tons of flecking in the first pic, to the left of that curly portion.
Maple or cherry is my best guess.

Additionally- your moisture meter should be inserted on the fresh split face, not the end grain... but certainly glad you have one in your arsenal.

I had a blast on the Elk River and the area. Some of the best friends I still have, 20 something years later, I met there.
I was there for the BFN 3 restart. Some of my dearest friends lived down on Lucy’s Branch.

I’ll tell you though, too many snakes for me to go hunt fire wood.

Is Eric’s BBQ still there, just west of downtown Athens?
