Some processing ahead Saturday morning. Steel post dead center of tree with chain link on it if you can see it in center picture. Chain did not like it. Two heaping full trailers of limb wood plus one I already had waiting, so 4.5 cord to process I think.
May be the last scrounge but it sure was a good one! Too bad about the metal Dont mind metal detecting, just not with my chain saw! I think you should get a similar scrounge to start 2020...just sayin!!!
Can’t beat a nice big ole’ Red Oak monster. Good, straight looking stuff to boot. The way it grows, I think big Red Oaks can make quicker firewood than just about any other tree. Quick easy splitting, hardly any little branches to limb, typically grow straight and large in diameter. Usually not crowded by other trees.
This was the pin oak variety of the red family. My favorite firewood as since it is not good for lumber, and never feel bad splitting it up. Red oak here makes nice lumber. Only thing I have heard of pin oak being used for is railroad ties
I don't know if pin oaks grow here naturally, but I've planted a few bought from Lowes. From a supplier in Kentucky or someplace thataway. One was a reject that needed a post for three years to stand up straight. The trunk was like rubber and green as can be. Another one seems to fit the profile of a pin oak better the way it grows and is growing much faster than the other two. Some day someone will have some nice firewood maybe. It won't be me.
I have a lot about the same place, below the Newport river bridge on west/south side. Just cut a bunch of dead ash there this spring, chainsaw "found" several pieces of embedded metal objects too.
The only thing that sucks about red oak is that its so damm heavy but after that haul everything will seem so lite
