Doing an errand this afternoon, drove by this and recognized it as locust. It was on an icy bankside mixed amongst some prickers.. Had a couple minutes and PU was empty. Room to pull over. Grab and load in five minutes.
Not much but ill take it.
"I BRAKE FOR LOCUST" Should be a FHC bumper sticker!
A year ago i wouldve wrote this off as a roadside "weed tree" not knowing about locust and passed on it. Ive learned a lot on here IMG_1570.JPG
Some serious growth rings on one of the stump cutoffs. Fast growing stuff. IMG_1571.JPG My dream scrounge would be to cut a heaping PU load of this!

Thats what I have burning right now. Love locust!
I have at least 7 standing dead or down locusts in my woods Im going to get to starting saturday. My sister has at least 3 others I know of and who knows how many more for me.

Im not sure how long some of it has been down, but theres no sign of bark anywhere. Yet still solid.

Funny, i can honestly say ive never seen black locust growing in the woods. Around here mostly seen roadside or in abandoned lots growing like weeds. Where i got this there was a long row of them on top of the bank. Kinda wish i had kept the locust i scrounged in October separate. Buried in a stack of hickory and white oak now. Gonna start keeping a stack by itself now.

Probably 40% of my woods is locust. This one tried to take my stand out. Stinking vines helped pull it down. 20191214_104608.jpg

I grabbed a couple of seed pods last year and left them on the truck bumper when I got home. They ended up in the woods and I now have a couple of two inch diameter trees....one day I'll have access to my own locust score

I have the stove full of black locust right now and three splits waiting on deck in the copper boiler.
All from that big pile I had on that fence row. It is very dry.

Is that from that mega locust score you were into earlier this year Ron T ? That was an impressive amount. Still had more to cut if memory serves me correct.

I like the bumper sticker idea, Buzzsaw. Nice little score there. My last locust score was from an apartment complex that had some trees taken out. Got a half truckload out of it after someone else beat me to the punch and got the most of it. No complaints though. I’ve also got two locust about 8-10” DBH growing on the side of our driveway here but the power lines are keeping me from dropping them.

Nice find. My last score of 6 truckloads of locust was from a guy who thought it was junk wood. I happily took everything he cut down on his property.
