The wind downed this 18" DBH red oak in the fall in the "home woods" (rot in the stump) and I worked on it this past week. Over 50' of main stem up into the big crotches and a total height of 70':

Beautiful!!! I love splitting and burning Red Oak. Nice square pieces, and long burns. Just wish it didn’t take so long to season.

    That's a beautiful sight.
Haven't been in the woods cutting for over 2 years. Might have to change that next year for some Oak.

I've been blessed with a steady inflow of red oak onto my stacks. Nice to split manually and burns nice after 3yrs.

Some complain about the scent, but it smells like wood should smell. Smells like wood

I still say it smells like winter heat. It's nice to walk by a stack that's been sitting in the sun for a couple years. Love that smell.
    Baked Oak.

That is some beautiful red oak. I got about a half cord of it earlier this year, freshly cut, and I must say, it split REALLY nicely. I could go around a round and swing my Fiskars Iso-Core with medium strength and crack pen the top in a single swing while leaving the round whole, and then go around the 2nd time to fully split each crack. Only took me an hour to split a full (6 3/4') truck bed full.

Nothing splits like oak with the exception of black locust. They both explode apart and make a nice thump as well.
