How many full cords do you burn a year? Do you harvest your own wood, buy logs, or pre split wood? Are you working or retired? Do you have help with wood chores, or do them yourself?
I’m lucky enough to have plenty of trees on my property. I do all of the processing myself. My wife brings a lot of wood in, tends the fire and removes the ash. We truly love having the woodstove.
About 2.5 now, down from 5-ish a couple years ago. We put in an HE furnace. I've done all of the above, and now am getting logs from a tree service. Retired All me, all the time.
The purpose is simply to see what the average firewood burner does, at least on here. Nothing is meant to be belittling or offensive.
2-3 Harvest small amount on property, but mostly scrounge wood off CL & FB. Work full time, full time husband and dad Small help from the kids and my wife who will tend to the fire during the day as she loves wood heat.
3 cords, +/-, natural gas boiler and mini-split running in the background. Scrounged for free, from the dump, Craigslist, neighbors, FHC friends. Retired. My husband does the chainsaw maintenance, and helps me cut now and then. But otherwise, just me.
I burn about 6-8 cord per year depending on the quality of wood and weather. I never have a problem finding firewood. Most of what I burn now is sawmill reject logs that we get delivered for free. They've been debarked and checked/marked for metal. It's a pretty sweet deal. I'm a long way from being retired. My wife and kids help with everything.
3-4 cords burned each year. Haven't had any wood bought and delivered for a few years. Seems to coincide with when I was being laid-off I usually do the scouting, identifying, felling, bucking, splitting, stacking, by myself. Whereabout in Ma are you? Mendon here.
Guessing 8 cords a year. I harvest my own, lately from tops from logging operations. I work full-time so firewood collection is for vacations and weekends. I work by myself 90% of the time, and get my kids or my father to help when it's convenient. I usually prefer to work alone, it's my opportunity to crank my music and relieve stress.
Maybe 2-3 cords, my home is 2500 sq foot post and beam. Its built out of 4 inch foam panels. It holds heat amazing i very rarely burn during the day, my wife works from home so she will burn sometimes if she wants to. Havnt turned my heat on in 9 years, i get alot of wood scrounging. I do have 6 acres of mostly white oak,pine,hemlock, maples and alot of hickory. There is some red oak and ash. I work at the elementary school 5 minutes down the road from home. I process all my own wood and my Dad will help sometimes. My wife will also do a little stacking. Our daughter Mikayla not so much. My best helpers are my 5 year old boy Kameron (Kamo) , Dad and of course Tito our shepherd. I guess thats about it. Nice Thread!!!
1.75-2 cords I get from a tree service, (if needed usually not) but most of my old comes from 2 golf courses. The Superintendents cut down numerous trees a year and I have access to all they take down. I Cut my on. Split my own and stack my own I am working full time Most of the wood chores (95%) are all me Most of the time enjoying an adult beverage or three while working the wood
5-6 cords a year I scrounge from all over, friends with trees, stuff I see on the side of the road, etc... I work full time. I do most of the work myself, kids are too young to help yet, but they will in a few years.
2-3 Scrounge most of it roadside or through connections. Occasionally harvest/storm blow overs in property where we rent. Large woods, poor access, rugged terrain. Working PT/FT Wood is all me.
About 4.25 cords a year here. I harvest from neighbor's properties. Still working. I do most all the wood chores. Wife does a lot of the fire tending and brings the wood into the basement. We've been heating with wood 100 % for the last 4 years.
I dunno, maybe one cord/yr. Mostly fire pit, some in fireplace. Not very cold here. Harvest own wood from my windthrown/dead/cull trees on my land and scrounge where I find trees down. Still working some but on my own time. Probably 95% of it is just me, with occasional hired help.
4 to 6 cords per year. I mostly cut from a farm that has dead standing ash. The family helps out, but I am the only one allowed to use the 6.5 lb "splitter" I work full time and have 3 part time jobs.
About 5 cord a year I believe, only in second year with this setup. I’ve bought some KD while I’m building my own 3 year supply. I cut with a neighbor on my property and a few neighbors. I may buy more split green in the future if I don’t think I can keep up. Disabled for 10 years and just able to work the wood stacks on occasion, but that gives me all year and helps to keep me from seizing up entirely. It’s been all me so far but my wife doesn’t mind lugging a little firewood on occasion or feeding the chipper when we cut. She’ll probably do more after she retires in a couple years.
We burn 4-5 full cords per year. We hit 7 cords when we had an extended period of sub-zero high temperatures. 25% of our wood comes from our own wooded lot and 75% comes from a purchased downed wood cutting permit on state land. Retired. I do all the wood chores alone (I will do anything outside to avoid cleaning the house inside, we share "chores" and firewood counts ).
4 cords of 90% softwood (pine and spruce) Harvest my own from our 43 acres, I am still able to hand split everything but I think a hydraulic splitter is not too far off. Working FT I do all the heavy lifting, my wife will occasionally start a fire or reload the stove, kids are mostly out of the house now.
Nice thread idea. Believe I am on my 6th year of burning. Have consistently burned about 5 cords per year. I work full time. I’m a teacher so summers and vacations are helpful. Up until a couple years ago I worked in the summers and had other part time jobs too. I’m finally at a point where that is not necessary. But I do occasionally buy and sell on Craigslist to make a few bucks here and there. I get most of my wood from scrounging. An occasional tree service drop, and I get lucky at the dump sometimes. Most of the work is done myself. The boys, 13 and 11, help to bring wood in the house some of the time, as does my wife. They all help load the stove. My 13 year old helps with some of the processing. My daughters, 5 and 15 are mostly hands off. But the 5 year old helps carry firewood sometimes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
