One thing i like better than a good firewood score is getting lumber/boards (or anything else for that matter) at a great bargain. In my thread Lean to Build for a Friend (still havent finished btw) i had mentioned getting lumber at a steep discount. Well hit the jackpot again today at Lowe's. I was there this afternoon. Several cull packs by the contractor entrance. The framing lumber ones had been sold. Spied three packs of 12' 1x6 tongue & groove knotty cedar. Went inside and asked my guy what the could do if i buy them all. The original list price for the cedar was $25 each . Got 20 pcs plus four other lose boards for $25! The cedar had minimal damage. 75% of the boards were damage free. One lose piece had the worst damage. Four others were a 16' 5/4x6 PT decking board with a knot hole, 8" PT 4x4 with some rot from when it was milled, 8' 1x8 pine shiplap with a split at one end and an 8' PT 2x8 with forklift damage. The PT gets used for wood racks in some way shape or form. Wasnt even planning on going there today! $550+ worth of lumber for $25! Split end and open knot the only thing wrong
There's an award in there, somewhere. Nice haul, and what a great deal. I need some Cedar for a project I have in mind....maybe I should hit Lowe's.
Dunno if they do it out there, but check outside by the contractor entrance. Sometimes just random stuff strapped together with a tag of the original price and the reduced price. Rarely by the piece. This was on the side of the building getting wet and my guy goes "it got wet, give him a great deal"! It was marked down to $8-10 each piece. Smelled really nice and after getting a deal like that i didnt mind loading it in the rain. Temps were in the mid 50's.
Nice score. I always check for discounted lumber and contractor returns. I was able to put 3 laminate floors in my old house for less than a quarter of the cost. Sometimes lumber is 80% discount. It may be damaged but if you can use most of it, you're ahead of the game.
That the Lowes in East/New Haven or Wallingford? I go out of my way to avoid the New Haven store, but my office just got moved to New Haven so I'll inevitably end up there on my way home some days. If I have my choice, I usually end up at the Wallingford Lowes.
I would love to make something like that. I have some red cedar logs i dont have the heart to cut into firewood/kindling. They are larger than normal (for these parts) and id like to make something out of them. I know Woodsman has milled some gorgeous cedar. I have made a couple picnic tables for two stepdaughters. Frames were PT lumber but used 5/4 x 6 cedar (discount scrounged of course) for seats and top
Ive been wanting to make a lidded bench seat for the deck. I also have one of those plastic deck storage units i scrounged from an hauling job i did few years ago. Simple cheesy thing i store wood in just off the deck. Same size out of cedar though. I have some old dirty cedar 1x4 T&G ill probably use first. Bought a whole unit from the lumberyard years back. But for now just adding to my board hoard. I have a soft spot for cedar. My friend lets me store it in his barn. I can store a few pieces here but room is at a premium...the dilemma of a hoarder!
The way i hoard boards i could build one soon! JK! It'd be a bad idea then i'd be filling it with stuff...mostly firewood!
Dang I wonder how they got the red to stay red. Whenever I worked with cedar it always faded eventually. Looks like it was built and finished in one day
probably built/worked on indoors and kept out of the sun for extended periods. It is ashamed there is isnt a way to keep the sun from fading any type of cedar or any other outdoor wood for that matter.
Wow, that’s a beautiful red cedar table and benches! Would love to build something similar. Got lots more slabs coming when I can find some time to give to the Granberg mill.
I have t figured one out anyway. One of my last woodworking projects was finishing the master bath. Aromatic cedar vanity, dual sinks, raised panel doors, 8 feet wide. Sure looked nice for the first month LOL
Stopped to PU something. Of course i had to check out for any cull lumber. Score again! Got 50' of tongue & groove 1x6 knotty pine for $5 and eight 12'pcs. of 2x12 doug fir for $20. T&G pine had very minor damage and 2x12 only some checked ends. Didnt look to see original price of pine was.
