Looks are deceiving.

Did some cutting today! Just don't tell anybody!
I saw this wood hung up off the ground and almost wasn't going to check it, but glad I did.

Turned out to be some of the better stuff I cut today!

 

Yeah from the outside I would have bypassed that and moved on. Good persistence

 

I usually target that stuff. But I don’t mind a bit of punk. Good score!!

 

I'm with stuckinthemuck. I grab stuff like that when I see it . That punky layer catches fast on a bed of coals.

 

Many woods, the sapwood turns punky & rots so readily but the heartwood is almost always solid underneath. I being suspended off the ground like that, hard to beat.

It's Oak?

 

I've been noticing a lot of oak limbs with punky sapwood in the trails out of my yard. I will gladly be picking up all the good stuff once I buy a four wheeler.

 

Pretty sure it is cherry as I don't have any oak trees, but have a tin of cherry.

Unless I missed it, no. However, I do see wild grape vines. Then again, I was more occupied with looking for a snake. Lol!!!

 

The buds for next year every four inches or so look like virginia creeper
