Hello all, im back in need of more help. Ok i need a new chain for my saw, they try to make this stuff rocket science i sware..ok i know i need, .325, .058, 72 link chain, but im not sure on the size! The bar is 18 inch, but ok i measured from the top of the bar back to the sprocket, its about 22 inch, so is that what i should buy? Also what size file should i buy to sharpen that chain? I got a 3/16 4.8 mm but i read its a 11/64 and would be 4.5 mm would it still work for it? I really wish it would just list all this info in the manual or the bar! Anyone can toss me a hand here would be great, thanks everyone!

    .058 GAUGE
    72 DL (Drive Links)

Is ALL the sizes you need, the “Length “ is Measured by the Drive Links, 72 in your case

when specing a chain, the “Length “ is measured in drive links, bars are typically referred to by length in inches, but should be stamped with the proper DL count to properly fit the bar.

The width of the bar can vary quite a bit, and that would affect the D count

BTW, I’m no Rocket Scientist, They are my Students :wacky::p:startled::rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

The files you list are .187, .177, and .171 dia.
If I remember right, guys reported back after using one or the other, and most found not enough of a difference to worry about.
I have .325 chains, and use a 3/16 file. I also have a 3:1 hand sharpener, and never bothered to measure the file size (except that it's supposedly sized for a .325 chain). It's a nice file system to use, and the results here make cutting easy. The saw wants to cut, power to cut is well matched, rakers are topped off at the same time for proper depth control. In the end, that's what I need most.

I have a chain but one link is locked up and i wd40ed it used blow toarch and hit it with a hammer and it just wont move. And at the moment im falling back on kerosene for heat, all my cut wood was used up :( i just need this chain to get the fire going again. And there's snow on the ground... NEW 14-24" Chainsaw Blade & Guide Bar Kit .325/ 3/8"LP .050/.058" Guage US STOCK | eBay They have the chain i need, says bar 18 72dl, i just dont want to buy the wrong one. I mean, yeah it says 18 inch but from bar to sprocket is 22... Are they measured only by bar or full lenght? The saw is a craftsman 358.356280 its been a great saw. I baught a homelight and it was total trash. The craftsman is a small powerhouse and does what i need it to fast and easy.

Go to a local saw shop. Take your bar with you and tell them you need a chain for it. Any good shop will either have it in stock or can make one for you. You can try the place you linked but I think you will be disappointed in th quality of chain.

Length of the bar isn’t important. All you need is the info you already provided. .325 .058 72dl is 18” btw

Like mentioned above, the 72 drive link spec is your length. You have all the info you need.

Not sure if you can see this enough, but google maps shows three power equipment dealers in your area.

Well i just came back from ace hardware, i called and asked about my chain..i was told bring it up we got it! Yey! Went up..they didn't have it.... But they said this one should work! ...yeah its was a 20 inch 70 link,.050.. And it was only 29.99…!! I was like o heck no, i can order 4 online in diffrent sizes and hope one will fit for that price, also yeah i think i know more about chainsaws than that dude acted! ...ok my issue is this, the bar says 18 inch, full bar is 20 inch tip of bar to the back of the sprocket gear is 22 inch... So do i get a 18,20,or22 inch? The problem is online for check out none go by links, just inches....ok i think i figgured it out, would be the 18 inch 72 Dl, the longer chains are diffrent LPs..ok if thats correct please let me know! ...i got my chain soaking in wd40 right now to try and free up that stuck link, i figure if 12 hours of that dont work nothing will! Let me know guys! Stuff drives me nuts.. If i needed any part for years it was easy to get..then i got a chainsaw...lol

Pitch and Gauge MUST MATCH the Sprocket(s)(Pitch) and Bar Groove (Gauge)

The wrong Pitch (.325 in this case) WILL chew up chain and sprocket

using a .050 gauge chain( you CAN do it) in a .058 gauge bar WILL be sloppy, with the chain flopping from side to side, it won’t cut straight, whoever told you that would work, DO NOT LISTEN to Anything they tell you in the future

When measuring a bar for length, it is usually with the bar mounted and measured from the face of the saw, to the bar tip.

Due to the need to adjust for slack in the chain, there will be some variability in the Exact length of the bar measurement

Look at your bar and it should have a stamp or print on it stating how many drive link chain you need.
So the bottom indicates for this bar you need 74 drivelink chain. Middle is gauge, or width of those drive links (.063) and at the very top, you'll see .325. That's the spacing measurement between rivets, or pitch.

    Here's a .058 gauge, 72 drivelink 3/8 bar.

A bars length is measured from the tip to the front of the clutch cover. Say an 18” chain will cut an 18” piece of wood
