EDIT: Title says ash but I mean ELM! When I cut the live tree about a month ago, I assumed it was elm due to its size I guess. I see plenty Ironwood (hophornbeam), including right on this same spot but they never get this big. This might be 8-10" DBH. Anyone know ID? It split real easy. I recall elm as stringy, tough to split. Done with hydraulic splitter. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
Looks like ironwood to me , great stuff . I love elm , just not the big stuff that grows out in the open . Stuff is nasty to split.
That’s sure looks like ironwood to me. We have lots here mostly smaller but they do get bigger, like yours.
Ironwood/hop-hornbeam. We get a few large trees here in NE Iowa. National champion is 3' DBH in Michigan. Ironwood is one of my favorite woods: lots of heat, low moisture, with a short drying time. Notice those drying cracks already.
The bark of elm and ironwood is very similar but in my pics, notice the lines in the bark that grow vertically up the tree, those lines are close to perfectly straight. See picture 2. I just looked at two elm trees in my yard and neither has that. I was also hoping picture 1 showing the cross section of the end would confirm it is ironwood from those of you who know what it should look like. I don't recall what elm looks like in cross section.
