Thought I'd post this photo of the stack I put up today. It's about 1-1/2 cords, 7' tall and 16' long, 20" deep. The wood ID part is - there are primarily 4 species of wood in this stack, although there are closer to a dozen total in very small quantities. Name the 4 major species, try to be as specific as possible. I am guessing nobody will be very close with at least a couple of them. Have fun!
Location would help although looking at it on my phone, nothing helps blow the picture up enough to help
and beech, poplar, yellow birch, white/paper birch. Maple will be sugar and red. Knowing where your are there probably is a piece of ironwood/hophornbeam in there.
Well a couple of you guys are close. Two of the 'major' species (by volume) in there are red oak and soft maple. The other two are a lot harder to guess. And yes, there are a few pieces of some others, including ash, beech, hornbeam, pine, poplar and white birch. Might even be some elm and chestnut oak. The top 18" or so of the stack consists almost entirely of one of the two species, and the ones scattered throughout that have a reddish-orange cast are the other one. Any more guesses?
I think guys in your area have a better chance, since they would be more familiar with the common species there. Any of us can only relate to stuff we have seen. Some species have a big range, though. Ones I have here with the blonde sapwood are Slippery (Red) Elm and Red Mulberry/Redbud (I don't ID those too well yet, however.) But on your stuff, I see some flaky bark, and I'll guess that it's some type of Birch? I've gotten a little River Birch but I don't recall it having red wood.. I think it's a little tougher since the top 18" are shaded more by the shed roof. That wood looks like it may have split slightly stringy, and the core wood isn't uniform in appearance..kind of blotchy. This is tough because we don't have a lot of bark clues. Yeah, I saw those few with the tell-tale light-colored dots of dead Dog..
After studying the stacks intensely I have my guess(s). Red Oak & soft maple, Ash, Beech, Hornbeam, Pine, & Birch. A couple of others too. Did I win?
If i knew back then what i know now i would have had that as my school pic background instead of those stupid lasers
