Replaced the gas flippy cap on my 460 today as the old one would leak on occasion and wouldnt "seat" properly. A PITA when it leaks, especially when you don't know it is.
Are these universally sized...will the same one fit my 290 and 261? Bought two and have the spare in my toolbox. IMG_1389.JPG

For the most part, yes. There are flippy caps for trimmers and smaller units that are smaller, I think.
Part numbers correspond for your 290 and 460.

I believe the O rings are replaceable on those Brad. I'll check some of my IPL's when I get back to the laptop. Some may be interchangeable with some models but not all. I was getting parts at my dealer last week and he has a big drawer full of various sizes and types of caps.

buZZsaw BRAD. The gas cap for the 290 and 460 are the same part # and should interchange on your saws, different part # for the 261. The O ring is replaceable. The part #for the O ring is 9645-948-7734. The O ring is the same part # for 290, 460 and 261.

thanks. The 261 is new and hopefully the caps will be without issue for many years. The 460 i bought used almost two years ago. Had to get new caps for my 290 a while back.
What is your opinion of them farmer steve ?

We just have to deal with them Brad. I fussed with mine on the 241 this morning.
I may have put a tad to much oil in and the cap didn't want to seat right . I always pull up on the black tab to make sure they are locked in before I flip it down. I Stihl like the screw in caps on my older saws better.

Ah yes, good ol flippy caps. Stihl answer to something that was not a problem. Unbelievable a company would replace fool proof screw caps with O rings with moving parts that break and don't seat spilling gas and/or all down your leg. One of the reasons I'll never buy a Stihl.

I do not recall having trouble with the flippy cap on my ms362 until today. The dang thing would NOT seat! Bar oil cap. Neither me or helper could get it until finally I did something lucky and it seated. Do you guys know of any fix when this happens? I recall someone telling me what to do but I don't recall what it was, lol! Actually, I think he might have even found/shown me pictures of what's going on when it happens. Horrible design! Are the new flippy caps any better versus yesteryear?

I have noticed if the flippy cap doesn't seat it is because the cap is in the locked position. If hold the cap by the flippy part and grab the bottom of the cap you can rotate the two parts. It has to be correct before it will lock back on the saw.

I keep spares, I’ve only had one go bad but they shouldn’t have changed to the flip top. Never had a prob with the screw in caps.

The new flippy cap i purchased the other day was more or less the same. When they work it is great, but sometimes can be quite maddening when they dont. My problem is that i literally like to fill to the top and always have a spill when closing. Been trying to break the habit lately with success. I try to store the saws in the same orientation as if i was refueling them. Sometimes the oilers on them with leak a tad if stored upright. Ive heard of a member here who has the origianl style caps for sale.

WWW's just died. Is there a better kind or just buy another one?

Pic coming soon. (I think it's a flippy cap, is it). Good news is it lasted 20 years.

Yep that's a flippy cap. Never saw one busted up like that. OEM is probably the best bet. Not a fan of of chinesium.
