Got to spend some time in the woods today chipping away at the giant white oak I have posted about before. I bought an isocore this morning. I like it a lot, it splits what the x27 doesn’t. It’s easy on my hands unlike my old school orange monster maul. Counted growth rings, over 260 years old. Going to get back at it thanksgiving week. The main trunk is in 3 sections behind the portion shown. I’m procrastinating dealing with the huge heavy stuff.
The tree before it was dropped. We I’ll have to measure it next week. I’m guessing about 60” since my 20” bar isn’t even close enough to being long enough to cut the main trunk even when cutting from both sides.
It’s been an awesome score. I’ve got 4 cords split and stacked and haven’t messed with the 30’ trunk yet. It’s almost solid, only has a 5” void in the center. I am playing with the idea of justifying an ms462 purchase after Christmas to finish it up. Others have said my 390 can handle a longer bar but that’s not as fun...we’ll see how responsible I’m feeling when we get there.
Dont think about being responsible. Think about the chips being thrown off that 462. Think about the purr of that engine.
Thats an amazing tree. I hear you about the procrastination part. The size and logistics can be overwhelming. If you regularly cut 20" plus wood, a 462 is a good choice. Wish i had purchased a larger cc saw years ago. I always shied away from larger wood. Now i dont for the most part. Keep us updated.
One good thing about procrastinating is that the wood does not mind. It will just wait until you are ready.
Wow big tree, it's a shame to see one that age come down. Doesn't look dead - why'd the owners drop it?
That's the problem by me. I've waited a couple hours before some craigslist hoards only to find some leftover uglies remaining.
Ive only scored wood twice on CL and it was from an ad i placed. Wasnt anything special either. I pulled the ad as too much crap wood (rotting mounds of logs/rounds sitting for too long) offered to me. Ive replied to a few listings, but have a hard time getting a response. Im so spoiled that i dont want to travel over ten minutes!
It was dying. They were told it was 70% gone and they were tired of replacing the fence from the limbs falling out of it. If it was mine I would have waited a few more years to see if it would die before cutting it down.
