No black locust in my plot that I am aware of. I'm down in the SW corner of the state. Iowa/Lafayette county.

 

Thanks Buzz. I rigged up a couple power poles that stradle a tree. I don't have a skid steer, so figured I could winch the logs onto the poles from the tree using my UTV winch with a block and tackle set up. I have several nice cherry, walnut and ash logs bucked to 9 feet. Do I need to seal the ends with something?

 

I had a bunch of red oak rounds stacked on some saplings, uncovered. 18 months later they split just fine, with no rot. So long as you can get them off direct ground contact, they'll be fine.

 

Yes sir, if you are planning to saw these logs into boards, then the ends need to be sealed, with paint or sealer. It will help to prevent cracking.

If its for firewood use no sealing. Not sure sealing needed if its to be milled into lumber.

Unless it will be milled quick, ends need to be sealed to prevent checking on the ends

 

As a woodshop teacher I can tell you how frustrating it is to lose 6” off of each end from checking.

Thanks folks. I better get them sealed up quick. I have a local mill that wants some of them, but they tend to be a little slow at picking them up. Worst case scenario if they don't get picked up is selling them to the local craftsmen. We have an abundance of artist in the area that need blanks. The Walnut logs are all veneer quality and should be gone in a few weeks. I also found several people that want "decorative" firewood for non-functioning fireplaces. They really like uniform pieces of cherry and walnut. The next research project is drying Basswood blanks for carvers. Other than burning and lumber, is Ash good for anything?

 

If speaking to a home insurance agent about wood stoves. Be sure to tell them it is supplemental heat only. They may have a fit if you call it primary. Something to consider in todays world. Basically play there game!

Thanks YooperDave. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I am about 1.25 hours southwest of Wisconsin Dells. My family has several recreational and rental properties in the Eagle River and Rhinelander area. A little closer to your southern boarder.

 

I drive through there frequently on my "Menards run".

I'll keep the rentals in mind as every now and then someone asks about a cabin for a week. Well, first I should ask if the above mentioned properties are short or long term rentals?

 

They are all long term, full year leases.
