I’ve been burning and cutting firewood my whole life. I just picked up this bicentennial Grandpa Bear. Overall in really nice shape. Has anyone ever seen one with chamber on top plumbed for hot water heat? It has about a 3” thick space on top plumbed with an inlet and out let. And another inlet and outlet that has a looped pipe in the chamber. I don’t believe this is a homemade addition. The quality of the welds and fab work are the same as the rest of the fisher. Anyone ever see or hear of any old fishers like this?? Thank you. Fred.

Hey Fred great to have you. Looks like you’ll fit right in, talking cars and fisher stoves. I’ve never seen a fisher done up that way,but I’m sure one of the many weld shops that produced fisher’s could have done it as a option. There are other’s here with greater knowledge who will shed insight on this. Either way it will heat that shop nicely, they are great stove’s.

Thought maybe we had a stroker-stove there with what I thought was a by-pass handle on it where someone had maybe added it and secondary burn tubes inside, but I guess it’s just plumbing.

    Shucks...me could do a stroker-stove!

I've got a boiler buddy of mine that I'm going to have take a look at it. I'd like to put a hot water baseboard register in along the one wall of my shop. I'm heating a 40'x 40' Quonset hut with minimal insulation. I have a fuel oil furnace in the opposite corner of the wood stove. Between the 2 I can keep the shop around 68-74 depending on outside temps. I had a old homemade stove in the corner for the past few years and decided to try the fisher due to the larger fire box. I fired it up yesterday and was amazed by the heat it was putting off. I definitely need to install a baffle in it. Last year I went through approx. 6-8 face cord and 50 gallons of kerosene. Not awful for being in the shop almost every night after work.

Water in the stove will be a creosote generator, on the water pipe and a potential problem in the chimney.
I heat with a Fisher, they're a good stove. but I wouldn't use the water line if someone had added it to my stove

Hey Fred and Welcome! I am a fellow Upstate NY Fisher Wood Burner....and, for those of you that don't know - Upstate NY is Nothing like NY City, we have dairy farms, orchards, and a lot of land to roam on.

By the way Fred...no one seemed to tell you that the 'new guy'....that's you...has to buy the rest of us a round of beers...I don't make the rules, I just tell it like it is.

A round of beers is not a problem as long as you like PBR! I've been fine tuning the fisher here and there after work. Messing with baffle size and angle. My pipe going through the wall is 6" so I have no choice but to reduce 8" to 6". I swapped the 6" elbow to an 8" then to the reducer. This ol' girl drafts like a locomotive! It looks like I'm getting a pretty clean burn to out of the stack. It will hold coals easily over night.

On a side note while I'm trying to figure out this forum. How do you mention someone in a post and link them to it??

Welcome to FHC Fred! My wife and I visit the finger lakes region quiet frequently. We love the area and it’s beautiful views.

I use a Baker wood/coal stove but have seen many Fishers online for sale. I’ve never seen any make with the mods you posted.

I'm real interested in learning about the added water jackets and piping on my stove. I'd like to find a way to utilize it for a baseboard heater. My only complaints about the stove so far is when I open the doors I get some smoke rolling off the doors themselves, not out of the wood stove. And when I go to stoke the stove or load it I do get a couple spits of fine sparks that crackle and float out the top of the door openings. They burn up almost immediately. I cut the spark situation almost in half with the baffle, I'm hoping with some fine tuning of the baffle I can eliminate it.

That's an interesting Fisher modification, does your Piping go straight up and out or do you have a 90 degree in somewhere? Welcome to the FHC. I grew up in Eugene/Springfield, OR so I really like Fisher stoves, 1 of 3. :) 20191120_121658.jpg

The 2 ports on the top portion of the stove that come out of the side have a 1" tube that loops through the top of the stove and connects the 2 fittings. The 2 larger fittings just go into the 3" chamber on top of the stove. Like I said the quality of the welds and fabrication lead me to believe it is a factory add on from Fisher. Unicorn1 I see yah like to collect old Homelite also. I've got a small collection. A couple super EZ's, a 150, a 360 auto and a Super 925XL.. I love them old saws!

Nice to meet you Fred :) I'm leaning for water too, maybe a pool or hot tub? Maybe a cabin without heat for hot water? Total guess.

That set up would be great for a red neck stock tank hot tub!!!
