My welding skills are still at the bubble gum stage. I might be able to draw it for someone else to build. Dangit, now I'm thinking about building a little forge to bend and heat treat mower blades for this thing that somebody else has probably already made. Sent from my LML212VL using Tapatalk
These are log cut offs and are very large. Often times you couldn't roll them over even with a cant. It is just best to plunge cut, then cut all the way through to the bottom and then come up throwing all the debris away from the power head. This also avoids pinching the bar with these very heavy logs.
.404 cutters just have a lot more metal in them. I didn't think the difference would be that great but it is very significant in staying cutting longer. Even though I abhor semi chisel, I am using it in .404. The hardnose bar plunge cuts very easily too.
Just had to laugh when I pictured the guys cutting like that during some chain saw racing at a gtg. All had a good time.
Well the saga continues. I talked to this landowner again today for a good half hour. Sound like no one has taken him up on cleaning this up. Sooooooooooo......................... He says "there are more landings in the back, can you work on them too". These are just over the hill from where I was cutting. 3 more landings in total. Like I said when I started this thread, "I never catch a break".
Speaking of .404 chain, I put the 28" .404 set up from Armbru84 on my 660 & worked on the deck on some less than clean wood for about 3 hrs. Big White Pine & Oak logs. Chain held up well & cut very efficiently. I'm now a .404 "convert" on a log deck. Go big or go home I guess. Firewood Bandit if I was closer & come help you, but I'm about as far behind as you are. Ground's freezing up here though, so maybe some hope. I love the colder temps. Hope the deep snow holds off.
It's been remarkably cold for this time of year. Logs are freezing to the ground. This is dirty cable skidded wood, so rather than dirt covered it is now more like frozen mud covered. Dirt is hard on chains, but mud seems worse.
Firewood Bandit, I've seen those piles first hand! You just amaze me my friend! Your piles of wood would even make Scotty Overkill raise an eye brow!
I am amazed how well the semi chisel .404 holds up. I have used semi chisel for years but it just last so much better between sharpenings than 3/8ths LGX. I have crazy amounts of LGX since I got some deals and paid $200/roll for it. The .404 costs over 3.5x as much but I can cut a full tank with the 395XP without sharpening and that is a 8' truck box loaded to the top of the cab.
Thanks Dave. Just yesterday I was telling the guys I walk with about my screen name, FIREWOOD BANDIT. It came about when I stopped one day as a tree service crew was dropping a huge black walnut and hauling it away. I asked if I could have the wood and the crew leader looked me over and said, "Your one of them thare Firewood Bandits". I laughed and said I guess so. He said no problem and delivered it to my house which was just down the road. I figured the moniker fit.
Thats a good one. I usually call them vultures around here. Funny how we get a nickname and it sticks. One of the cooler user names here!
