Which of these is the better seasoned firewood and why? Would like to get some opinions on both and I know any seasoned firewood is good but if you had to choose between walnut or ash, which would it be?

Ill take ash all day long. Easy to split, seasons fast and good btu's.

Definitely ash all day. Walnut is not great firewood. I love it’s smell but crank out btu’s it does not.

I have a lot of both on my property, walnut takes a little longer to season, more difficult splitting, ash seasons quickly and splits easy, both are good btu’s, large highly valuable black walnut round next to my Kubota rtv for size comparison

Ive got a bunch of seasoned walnut that I’ll be using this year mixed in with oak and hedge with a bunch of ash on my seasoning pile for next year even though I know it’s probably seasoned enough for this year.

See what burning shagbark hickory does to me!! :hair:

Yes they are. My experience with walnut was a let down. I’d burn it yes, just not impressive.

I find them similar- easy to split, fast drying, BTUs.
But Ash seams to edge out Walnut on all three.

I need some hickory in my pile. I’ve been on the lookout for some. Always trying to find different hardwoods. This is only my third year of burning so I have a long list of wood I need to test out. Send some my way!

I’ll take a nice ash any day of the week-Ironically, I further don't really care for walnut due to the amount of sand-like ash it leaves behind...ash is much firmer....yeah, there’s a theme going here

i have limited experience with walnut. Plenty with ash and its one of my favorites. Base my decision on ease of processing as i hand split all my wood.

Yeah, ash seems to be the superior choice. I was hoping that walnut wasn’t too far behind ash. Especially since i have a good supply of it.

Good to know. My splitter does all the work for me so I’m more concerned with heat, coals, smoke, smell, etc.

I’ve only burnt a little bit of walnut and think it’s ok shoulder wood but ash is my all around favorite wood. For where I live ash makes plenty of heat to keep us warm 90% of the winter.

My Wolfe ridge is a beast, I’m waiting to score some elm so I can tear it up

Nice! I have a dirty hand tools splitter that does a good job for me. Wolf ridge would what I would upgrade too if I ever needed to upgrade.
