Thats right! The first thing i did when i got home was to lite up the stove. The cold air was mucho fantastico but after hours sitting still, a warm fire was more than welcome. Kept the house and me warm in the evening too
21f right now 72f inside, the jotul is crusing, gonna be cold for a few days then it goes up to 50f next week, crazy weather
Temps dropping like a rock after the 8"-10" we recieved. Mid single digits tonight and we'll have negatives a few more nights this week. Not quite cold enough for Midwinter's black locust just yet. We'll save that for the neg 30's!
Articles like these are always trash and belong in the garbage. These "writers" are clueless to 99% of the subject they "write" about. Just a waist of time to even look at the ...
I agree. It is subjective in what constitutes "worst." For example the worst for me would be not enough freezing weather to form solid ice, and a winter of no continuous snowpack for snowmobile access to good ice for fishing. Also making it worst for me would be continual high winds in open spaces like the Dakotas. Too much drifting makes deep hard pack and slush pockets on lakes, thus difficult travel by any means. Our MN records tend to be extreme. There have been documented temperature swings of over -70 degrees in 24 hours. I lived in the Grand Portage area the winter of -60f in Embarrass about 60 miles west of us. Our outdoor thermometer bottomed out at -45f that morning by 7 am so I not sure how cold it got in our yard, but it was different kind of cold than our standard -20f, which is very common, even into late March. I recall one year of a continuous snowpack depth of 70" by March, almost tying the record of 75" set in 1950. And waist deep snowpack at the end of April. That was too much snow for getting around on the lakes for fishing. We loose a significant portion of deer herd some winters. Even many moose have been lost due to not being able to escape heavy predation by wolves. I always wonder how the deer in the UP survive 300" of snow...migration, deer yards (cedar swamps)? As it is our deer density is below 10 per square mile where I hunt. After the rut our deer migrate from high snow pack areas a few miles inland from Lake Superior down closer to the lake. It must be similar in many areas of the UP.
30* feels like 25*. Stoked fire after work and ran out to stand. Woods were strangely still. Combo of cherry, highly valuable black walnut and a few splits of oak. Thermostat sitting north of 75
I cut some very long dead standing cedar a couple hours ago to test. It burns great, but is taking up way too much room in my stove. I could get more heat from half the volume of any of my stacked wood. I think I'll use the cedar I have for what I've been using it for for the last few years. Very dry is great kindling, but poor heating wood. 26 now and going to 15 tonight. I'll keep with the oak, hickory and walnut. It's still a good thing to know. For a normal Arkansas winter, I have about five years worth of standing dead. And, probably another decade in mill slabs. Sent from my LML212VL using Tapatalk
Look at the size of the locust I have for later!!!! 10” splits to go along with some oak and cherry. Going down to 19 tonight. Currently 29. House 72

Burning seasoned oak splits. Cruising STT at 550'F. Just mild snow flakes that didn't stay on the ground. Okay Old Man Winter, bring it on!
