Knew most of this already from my book on tree felling - "To Fell a Tree" by Jeff Jepson. Excellent review though. Don't recall hearing about the "shaving" technique for spring poles though. Learn something every day! Thanks!
Who the heck gave that guy a chainsaw? He didn't do even one thing right. He's lucky those were relatively small trees.
Funny how people are willing to share it with the world when they've done something really dumb. I have no experience felling, but it looked like a number of bad things could have happened with both trees he was cutting. This is what my wife imagines happening when I tell her I want to down the elm and ash trees that are dead standing in our woods.
He pretty much did everything to ensure that tree would split from the back and then had no escape path at 45 behind the tree he was cutting. He ran directly into danger. He has some cahoneys for sure.
