Massive wood teepee...otherwise known as a woodshed! This is how it starts, next thing you know you've got a 16x32 shed covering your outdoor boiler and 14 cord of wood.
But the wood will definitely be even better if you top cover. Simply put, you lose some btu's when it is exposed like that to the weather. But, many do not seem to care about that. I do. Putting up firewood is still hard work.
His covering/uncovering will come to an end real quick when theres 16" of snow on it! I agree, cover it and forget it. If you want to go through the hassle of covering/uncovering in the summer maybe it might help the tiniest bit? Letting moisture evaporate up and out on hot days, but covering it during rain days? Seems like too much work for minimal gains but I can see maybe how that would help... But winter time? Dont bother.
I shouldve been more specific. If selling or using the wood over the Winter then cover and uncover when needing to remove the wood. Also depends on PITA factor of course!
So many people have a differing opinion- or if you're like me- you change your mind back and forth. I use tarps at a couple of points in the year- I use them when the leaves start falling- then I uncover again- and I use them when snow is going to be coming down. But I live in an area that doesn't get a whole heck of a lot of snow that often. Sometimes we get slammed, but not all that often the last few years. One thing that I have found is that I like using the canvas drop cloths that we use for putting over the floors when we paint. They seem to last longer because they appear to be a bit more durable. But just take this into consideration- I don't have an impressive wood stack that I'm covering yet so I get by with putting on and removing the tarps without much trouble, and I also have committed to building a woodshed this summer so my tarping days may be coming to an end.
You know how badly wood peels after a bad burn. Actually, UV protection for the visqueen. It will last a surprisingly long time if not degraded by the sun.
Its the stuff im selling, so i was thinking in terms of keeping it dry somewhat. If i get 16 inches of snow obviously im going to have to dig it out. Idk well see
But I'm just saying that once it is covered, don't uncover it until it is sold or is used. I've seen others on this forum who cover then uncover then cover again over and over just to keep their wood dry. Just seems to be wasted work to me.
I started top covering with clear plastic corregated roofing. Im not sure if the green house effect really helps dry it better with the sun but I sure do feel good about it!
