People don't burn in the deep south? My customers and I disagree. Of course, nothing like you northern burners do! This is in east Texas, southwest of me (warmer) by 125 miles! I am REALLY surprised there is a firewood operation of this magnitude in this town; it's not even that big and it's not close to a major city. It's 2.5 hours to Houston one way, 2.5 hours to Dallas the other way. I wonder if sellers come from so far to buy wood wholesale. Sheesh, never would've figured someone could succeed in this location. Would love to know how much they sell wholesale. Would love to know how many cords is on location and how many cords they sell/year! https://www.americanfirewood.net/
there is a FHC member Woodshax who makes and sells wood bundles. He buys his wood. My guess is there is a lot of "casual" burners. Folks who start a fire during the holidays, "cold" days etc. down there just for the ambiance! Nothing more magical/hypnotic than a fire IMO! Goes back to our caveman days i guess!
I agree on that but, holy cow, that town is only 35,000 people and there is another town 20 miles away of 35,000. I have a city with a metro area of 350,000 people 30 miles from here and there is NO operation anywhere close to here that is anything like that and we are a few degrees colder here. Thinking about this, I would find it hard to believe they sell the majority of that wood at retail. No telling how many cords of wood they have there.
Holy cow is right! A lot of wood for sure! A central operation??? Triaxle loads come in and get processed??? Maybe they wholesale it out in large quantities? A payloader loading a big dump truck? There is a picture somewhere on the forum homepage of something similar. Massive mound of splits with a bulldozer pushing it!
Jake, his wife, and his father in law Darryl run american firewood....and they do a whole lot of business..... The buy a lot from the Texas Louisiana border....truck load/ tree length. They sell all over south Texas and supply some state parks in bulk. They are good people. Less trees down here so firewood sell for more and his operation is very automated which is the only way to make money in selling bulk. Our sales are only retail and at State and municipal camp grounds..... It is basically a law in Texas that if you are camping you have to have a campfire....even if it is 85F at night
BTW, I think it was the company I posted above... they have a vending machine for firewood! EDIT: Here is a pic of their vending machine...
My brother just got back from the Formula One car race.He said it was cooler in Texas than he realized.Chilly enough to light the stove.
Possibly a charcoal operation? Blows my mind to see they went to the trouble/expense of putting a roof over it to actually keep it dry. I think most of the dealers around here try to find the biggest mud puddle possible to start the mound in.
When I saw the roofed barn, I figured they might've found a company that went out of business for some other type of operation, and bought it. I see quite a few open 'barns' like this but that one is a bit larger than normal! Then again, they might've built it from scratch.
Yes, I've seen this picture and understand these are all over around campgrounds. Good idea. Maybe wishlist would be interested in making something like this.
I would think the Campground/fire ring business alone would be as large, or larger, than the wood heat side of the operation!
They don't make any charcoal.... they sell by the face cord and get a good price for it especially to small quantity buyers. Those are my vending machines....Jake bought a few before he got real busy with the bulk sales....he has 2 of them down on the coast. Crystal beach I think, Lots of camp fires on the sand!.....I am strictly in Camping areas, vending 24/7 ......lots of money catering to campers
Yes, I remember your posts but could not for the life of me come up with your screen name at the time. I'm glad you chimed in. As stated, we have another member here, wishlist who sells a lot of wood to campgrounds and I thought perhaps he'd be interested.
