Dumb animals don't look up, or so I've been told. It hurts to be reminded just how dumb an animal I can be.
I've been walking right by this guy for three years. Practically right out my back door. Maybe it just fell in some of the recent wind we've had and that's why I just noticed it... Even so shame on me for not seeing it sooner.
Liberated it from the poplar it was hung up in and got it bucked up. When I finished pulling the pieces down to my wood pile I walked back to get my saw and saw another downed locust not far from where this one was. It was the fourth in a chain of dead locust I've found in this same spot. Every time I go up to cut one I've spotted, I spot another when I'm done cutting the one I came for. Wonder how long I can keep this up!

Made my day... or at least I made a day of it.
Things were looking pretty bleak for me going in to this burning season as a lot of the wood I had CSS left from last year got wet and moldy from how humid and rainy it's been in our cove this year. Even the covered stuff. These few little locust finds have put me in ok shape. I prefer to give it some more time, but most of this wood is burnable as-is.

    Great score:yes:
Have heard you should mix some good dry
Oak,birch, ash .... with locust for it
    to flame well .
    ....
    I wouldn’t know though, I burn 100% birch.
    ....
Bet locustpost has good locust knowledge :)

Funny how things are right under your nose some time and dont even notice it. Great that its locust as not rotted and punky.
Will you burn that this season dingbat ? EDIT disregard question. Read other posts.
Nice work by the BTW! Scored a small BL last weekend and my first roadside scrounge of BL a few weeks ago.

I temper it with polar. Mostly to keep the stove from overheating while still being able to run plenty of air. I find it flames just fine by itself but has a tendency to run away if you don't keep it damped down.
I've got a bunch of young birch around the property and am looking forward to the day it's big enough to start harvesting.

    Burnnin' some right now! :D

Congrats on the score! Word of advice... Keep a close eye on your stove if you're burning locust and aren't familiar with it. It starts off real slow then snowballs as it heats up. Everyone I know around here has a story about a stove running away to the point of being damaged on a load of locust.

Awesome little score there. I love locust. The burning of it makes the center of the fire so hot it just looks like there’s a mini sun in your stove.
