PT is made from Southern yellow pine which warps like crazy. I tried it (by accident) a few years ago and it worked I got a few 16' 2x4 and 4x4 PT warped like a banana. Stored them in my woods behind the shed and i discovered they had straightened out for the most part. If you ever work with PT try to attach it wet or damp. Harder to nail/screw when drier. Splits worse too when dry IME.
Worked for maybe 3 hours this afternoon. Cut and set the remaining rafters and attached all the one by strapping. Strapping is some 1x6 milled pine, 1x4 reclaimed form boards and 1x4 i salvaged from a 3'x14' pallet for metal roofing. Despite being weathered, the wood was all good. May go late week to do more work.
Its at my friends house. He has wood scattered all over the place. Dont know if he will start to fill it right away as he is a busy guy. Im trying to teach him the ways of the forum. I have enough of my own wood at his house to fill it twice!
If you're ever looking to dispose of metal roofing, I'd be happy to make a trip down in the truck to pick some up for a fair price! It hurt me to buy new at HD for my last shed build. Reused lumber and pallets don't deserve brand new galvanized roofing panels!
Him and i were cleaning up scrap metal (mostly steel) from his neighbors across the street (he was a concrete/excavating contractor) and i found the panels almost completely buried with leaves and dirt. I pulled them out, brushed them off and almost scrapped them. A few old screw holes and painted white. Looks like from an old porch enclosure. A couple are are a bit dented/twisted. I got the brain storm for this build. They are 3'x12. Ill cut 6' pieces and maybe short a piece. Last year i was helping reside an old barn with painted steel panels. One section had galvanized corrugated panels from the 1950's (guessing) i had to take off. They were some thick gauge. Went to the junk yard. Wish i had kept them
FYI I was short a couple when I built my shed. ….but......
FYI I was short a couple when I built my shed. ….but...... View attachment 229185 View attachment 229186
Great idea, but only 4' wide and 6' roof width, extra light not really that critical. Plus im CHEEEEP and paying out of my pocket for build. I have extra random length painted steel panels around my place. I'll probably start at each end, working toward the middle and use the steel there. Hafta do a layout first. Not sure of aluminum panels exposure.
Between yesterday and today i cut and installed all the roofing. Scrounged panels and my other friend gave me almost a full bag of roofing screws to use. Turns out i did have enough for the 36' as i originally had thought...9-12' panels. Have to go back and caulk the holes that were already in the panels. Didnt feel like getting caulk on anything while i was working. Good rain tonight and tomorrow will help wash them a bit. Still have ends and dividers to do and decking to set plus bracing too, but getting there. My friend was home today and liking it a lot.
I havent worked on it since two Saturdays ago when i finished the roof. Have to do ends, diagonal bracing, floor and some "trim" work and maybe some other details. My friend will be the one filling it since it is his to use. Having access to all the Asplundh wood and minimal room to store it, i may give him a couple PU fulls of rounds for my "rent" payment 2020! This will get him started. Been raining, ive had my own work so havent been there. I spend 2-3 hours each time. Clock change doesnt help either. He has maybe two cord of white oak which i felled and cut Sept. of 2018. He split it all. He may use it to fill some. Im trying to teach him the ways of the forum as ive learned. Oak 2-3 years to dry.
One of my favorite albums of all time! Not often I run into a Cake fan. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
not really a fan, just remember the song from radio 104 WMRQ during the mid 90's. They would grossly overplay a song until it was burned into your brain. Damm, that was half a lifetime ago for me. Im getting old!
The build is coming out great. It’s awesome that you were able to source so much of the lumber for so cheap. The culled lumber at the Lowe’s near me is usually pretty lousy. It’s always such a crazy random assortment of pieces being sold as a lot. Only once have I ever considered buying any of it. But it hadn’t even been priced yet, and they said to come back in the morning. Not exactly the best customer service. I have bought some of the culled lumber from HD near me though. That is sold by the piece and just marked with certain color paint to notate the % mark down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ive boycotted HD for many years now. Couple bad experiences as a contractor years ago so i went to Lowes. The Wallingford store does it the same with bundled cull packs. If you ask they may break one up, but usually they are so dirt cheap ill buy the whole thing. Wallingford opened in Spring 2007 and ive been going there since so they know me and work with me. Havent been in a while. Should go see what they have, as my board hoard has gone down quite a bit which i kind of like!
Very, very nice build. BTW, take a right off rt395, when it crosses into Ma. I'm about 15mins east of there. I'll go ahead and stake out the corners for your next build.
Havent updated this thread in a while as i havent done a whole lot there. Busy with work and scrounging wood, plus his yard is very muddy too. I finished the roof a while back and have since framed a couple of the bay floors and set the decking. Two bay floors will be reclaimed 2x6 PT and the center is 5/4 x6 decking PT. Diagonal braces and one floor to do yet and finish the other end. Ends are done with reclaimed slab wood Eastern white pine. Will use the same to add a rustic touch to rafter ends and post fronts. All in all about $75 out of pocket. Used pallets to separate the three bays. Gotta PU another. Got the first wood in it today. Maybe two face cord of white oak splits processed in the Spring. Capacity is about 5 1/2 cord if triple rowed 16" splits. He is doing two rows with nuglies in between for now.
