Buddy of mine called me and said he took down a red oak and needed some help hauling it out. He told me if came out and helped him for an hour I could load up a truck full. I was short on time so I only helped him out for about 30 minutes, but I did get to take home this haul. It was a 125+ year old growth red oak.
I feel bad for the old tree. Apparently, one of the main branches was hanging over their house and their insurance was requiring they remove the branch. The homeowners got quote for removing the branch and the whole tree and deciding to go for the full tree. I would never remove a beautiful healthy old growth hard wood from my property that was not endangering my home or family. But to each their own I guess, and least that old tree will heat my home for a couple weeks. And that is one less truck load I'll have scrounge next spring. It's amazing how much weight that wet dense red oak is. 11-12 rounds and my 1/2 ton Ford was squatting something fierce!
Thats worth a half hour of work! Great helping your friend and getting some wood too! It is ashamed to see an old tree go. As much as love cutting wood im for saving trees as well.
Wow! My load was definitely not that heavy! It was close to home though, only 4 miles or so, which was about a 10 minute drive.
This was a tree that was knocked over by a May 2018 tornado here. Tree guys bucked the wood to every length but the right one. See mt post I hate to cut you short I had to buck in half, quarter, then load. Still some heavy SOB's though!
I'm pretty lucky that my buddy who calls me sometimes to pick up wood also sells firewood, so when he cuts down a tree for somebody, he does a pretty good job bucking to 14-18". My Englander NC-30 can take up to 20", so I prefer my lengths to be right around 18" instead of 16" so I fill up the stove better for the long overnight burns.
I agree. The only problem with me having a bigger truck is i would overfill that one too! I like to get my moneys worth out of a load and dont wanna make two trips! Think of how much more wood id have. You can never have too much wood, or can you? What do you think Midwinter?
Nice score. I’d hate loosing so much shade, that will for sure change the scene! But as you said, to each his own.
