What Blast Media do you use for cleaning pellet stove parts - just got these 3 ??

Hello
Just had a consultation on types of blast media, their aggressiveness and type of finish for cleaning black carbon and white calcium on dirty rusty parts (Burn pots, baffle plates and augers...etc) with different blast media and it’s re-usability!
Which should I use for steel and which for cast irqon?
I came up with 3
1. Black Diamond from Tractor Supply
Medium grit that is somewhat reusable. $8 50lb bag
Semi rough finish but cheapest by far
2. Glass Beads from Kramer Ind. $70 for 50lb bag
Medium / Fine grade and is re-usable
Smoothest finish but less aggressive so more passes to get a clean finish.
3. White aluminum oxide
90 Mesh
Tougher finish but more aggressive so less blasting time to clean.

Harbor Freight has an assortment of sand blast media too.....not sure of pricing. Pretty sure they have alum. oxide, walnut shells, glass beads and soda.

 

I checked with my local Harbor Freight and they do not have any blast media! Had to get the Black Diamond from Tractor Supply in the next town over!

 

Our HF also handles blast media,and is a small store.probably pertains to what sells,in that market area.Glass is always best for soft stuff,great on aluminum,we used it a lot in the auto engine rebuilding shop.But,glass cracks with use,usually a 1 time deal,so gets expensive.Also,all media leaves residue,needs to be thoroughly washed off before painting or use,dish soap works well.Also,if you glass bead any aluminum sealing surface,such as the lip on aluminum cylinder heads,where the valve covers seal,you have to lightly "sand the surface" with a fine scotch brite pad,or it will leak oil.Have also seen this happen with cast iron sealing surfaces.Just some thoughts from old mechanic,lol.

 

Well now it is out with the Black Diamond Coal Slag and in with the more expensive$$ White aluminum Oxide!

So far it seams the AO2 is better for this heavy rusted Quadrafire Top Baffle Plate!

Nice.I never used AO,know nothing about it.I do know,for rude/crusty steel,blasting sand is cheep and easy.Can even be used outside in the open,I used to use it on horse trailers,before painting them.Keep up the good work.
