So this was listed as free locally for me. I see some birch in back and then the main stuff. It looks like basswood a little.

I'd it's gooder stuff like oak I'd get it. But not if it's basswood or low BTU stuff. Could be box elder?? I'm having difficulty identifying this at the moment.

What say y'all regarding the big stuff?

Bigger stuff looks like red maple of some sort. A decent average firewood.

Yes, you should get it. But you already know that answer, no?

Even if it is basswood, you can use it for the firepit.

I've got cords of basswood at my wood lot already down, just needing cut hauled, split and stacked. One of these downed basswood is doing a very good ash impersonation.

WTH? Since we can't tell by the pics either, you can always say it was locust and oak and make all of us green with envy!

Take your saw and do a few cuts, that will help.

The first pic red elm??? My only experience with basswood was a small tree. Do large basswoods have the darker heartwood?

Second pic. The large rounds bark reminds me of Norway maple. The medium size (foreground)have the grayish white in the recesses of the bark which is reminiscent of tulip (yellow) poplar.

Yeah, if close enough, check it out. You can always say no!

Basswood is a consistent yellowish orange. No dark heart wood.
    Looks elmish to me

Yeah, basswood doesn't. I was looking at pics I took a few weeks ago from basswood I cut. It's probably norway maple. if so, that's worth it.

    I'll contact them.

That's the other thing it could be. I doubt it's elm, unless siberian, which I've found splits pretty well,

It's amazing. All the wood pictures I see on here have so much moss on them, that I can't tell what the wood is. It's so dry where I live that moss doesn't grow on the trees.

Wish I could help. The bark is how I usually determine species.

I agree with Dave, it’s wood. You already know what we’d say. Having that shoulder wood isn’t an issue for ya, Tom. Feeling like I’m redundant here, the amount of it is quite substantial. What have you got to lose?

Well chit, not all of us can see 20/20 now, without getting microscopic, these will suffice!:binoculars::binoculars:
