...Tuesday nite, highs in mid-20s. It’ll be around for a few days - a bit too early for the true-Winter temps. Among my this-years-wood, I’ve got most of a cord of pear (fruit, not Bradford) and even tho I’ll be finding out soon enough, I’m wondering if someone could mention what kind of heat it’ll put out. My 100 year old craftsman has virtually no insulation so it’s always a hoot to watch the woodpiles shrink. I’ve got a couple of hundred 4x6x18” white oak pallet wood for backup. There’s a lot to like about Canada, but their unfailing zeal for sharing weather isn’t one of them. It’s gonna be a looong Winter.
I feel ya next door. Forecast calling for -2°F Tuesday night in the valley here, -9°F at my work Monday and Tuesday night! Definitely have the wood stove going, though I'm getting the chimney cleaned Tuesday morning.
Hi Neighbors! Looks like a chilly little stretch coming up for us. We are expecting valley bottom lows of -18c/0f for us as well. It doesnt look like it will last for to long this go around. -3c/26f right now with spruce keeping us warm.
Hopefully you can start shutting doors more often and let that pear last a bit longer. Pear should do fine, I find apple and pear will sustain you quite well, mostly if those trees grew near you. Maybe do a mix of oak and pear before bed that night. Now house Being uninsulated, it’ll help knowing you have confined the heat to rooms you want to use it for and then warm up those other rooms more slowly? Too bad about the insulation issue, I’m not much help. But my last house I burned in was quite drafty. If wind was going, then it took the heat out quickly. Likely was only insulated through the roof but not much else. Can’t imagine how much that drops your house to.
Same system already dipped down here. Any highway in or out of here is closed, sitting about 8*F In my previous house years ago I found a pallet plant that would deliver scraps for reasonable $$. Got by even with husband traveling. Might be worth your time to look into a stove that can burn coal too. We used wood for heat but a giant chunk of coal overnight kept the chill away and made it easy to light a new load in the morning (our pine burned fast).
Idaho! Very cool. About 10-years ago I was working on an offshore oil rig with a guy from Idaho...after listening to his backcountry stories for years I always dreamt of moving out there. Something about it just sounds so awesome. Of course 1 degree in October doesn't sound all that awesome....and I don't mind the cold, but thats a bit extreme!
Heya. It looks like we’ve made it through the worst of it, and my woodpile does reflect that. I hope you are safe and warm in that fridge.
Idaho is a great place to live, if you can stay outside Boise. We have the greatest variety of game in the lower 48.
We do confine our heat as best we can, but our first floor layout sure isn’t designed around that idea. I did try that mix of pear and oak, it held wonderfully overnight. There is no doubt now that the pair is a terrific mid winter spaces.
Thanks, but although I haven’t researched it much, what I have found is that it is an affordable option without big returns. The worst of it is over. For now.
I have a friend that lives in Idaho. Makes great knives from Damascus steel. He also guides and bow hunts elk in the mountains. His name is Gary Pickens. Look him up
Thanks. Yeah I think thats it for awhile for both of us! We got down to -21c/-6f but the nice thing about this time of year is the real cold stuff doesnt settle in for to long. I just loaded an overnight load of larch and the temps outside are a nice -9c/16f. Expecting a bit warmer tomorrow. Id like to go back to just evening burning for awhile if I can. Stay warm!
