Just put a new double walled chimney liner in. We have had a few fires so far but not full time in the furnace. We are getting much longer and better burns with it. Last year we had alot of coal left after a burn but this year it's down to powder with less wood and long burn times. It's a shame I didn't do it sooner!!!
I have the normal 4 ft terracotta 8x8 liner. It was in bad shape he had pieces breaking off. On the second floor of the house the wall would be hot were the chimney is.
That’s not good at all. You shouldn’t be able to feel any warmth from a chimney through a wall of the house. Especially as high up as the second floor. You should cut a whole in that wall for inspection. As a mason for 40 years I’ve seen some very sketchy stuff built. Like brick walls left out completely with the flues against wood because the carpenter didn’t leave enough room. A chimney liner will add a layer of safety but it sounds as if you have a few layers of safety missing already.
