I'm going on my first real scrounge tomorrow. Simple walnut piles.

But, the guy said the person he bought his land from was looking for someone to cut wood on shares. 80+ acres of lovely Ozark hardwoods. Not the cedar weeds like I own and what is mostly around here.

I'm not a big tree cutter. But, apparently this person has not had a logger show up to do anything in over a year. I guess I'll start another thread on that because that scares the heck out of me.

Anyway, these are the pics of what I'm heading out to get in the morning.

    Highly Valuable firewood there.
    :)

Haven't burnt any myself, but others say it's great shoulder season wood, but ashes a lot & not much for coals.

What doesn't kill you will at least make you warmer.

I think that's how the saying goes.;)

How much do you plan on hoarding per day?

Take it slow, take breaks, and take pictures.:)

It's only highly valuable because my wife like to split wood. I kinda spoiled her on walnut, so I'm finding more for her. She will split oak and hickory if I put it in front of her, but I guess I'm doing it for me too. The guy was going to burn it this Friday if nobody came to get it. Couldn't let that happen.

With a maul, wedges and two pound hammer. She's a weirdo and a fitness freak at that.

More power to her. She wants to, just give the right tools. Sounds like a keeper as T.Jeff Veal would say

Its the best kind of wood...free! So not the best btu wood but looks decent enough. A lot of work, but thats what scrounging is all about. Work safe and take your time.
Do you have a deadline to get it out? How close to home wheelhorseiron ?

Beware of people wanting you to cut on shares. I've seen very few work out well. Usually it is the landowner who wants too much of the cut and wants you to split and stack it too. Then there are the ones on the other end who take but never give and then you see them no more.

If you are not comfortable felling trees, then it does not sound like that would work out for you anyway.

Looks like some nice dry wood, in the ground and easy to get to! Nice score!

He wants to be able to burn the brush when it snows, so the sooner the better.

She just wants some of the tops cut up, but this is third hand from the guy who has this pile.

We'll see. I'm not in a hurry to split and stack for someone else.

Just got home a few minutes ago. I didn't even get to the big pile. I wound up clearing smaller piles I came to first. Most of it was the nasty oak. I only loaded as much as I thought the truck could handle on those steep hills. It did pretty well. There's at least two more loads of this size on his place. I'm going to try to cut some walnut at 36" to mill down for a bathroom countertop. I'll probably have to use the winch for that.

Anyway, pictures, because I hear y'all like them.

I didn't split any of it to load, but probably should have. It seems that I'm probably as broken as the army said I am. Or maybe my body can see a calendar and realized I hit 40. I'm going to unload the trailer today and hope for the best.

I don't know how to add a video. But, yes, she does it on purpose. A total weirdo. I do it for fun, but she does it for exercise.

I do it for fun. Exercise is the hidden benefit! Gets the ol' heart pumpin' good...especially hand splittin'

I unloaded the trailer. I'm going to wait for the 19 year old boy in case he wants to unload the truck. He's a weirdo like his mom. [IMG][IMG]
