So as I was movie g my wood from stacks to the shed and sticking splits that were piled this winter my wife said I need a different solution that takes less manual labor. Many of you may know we had our first son in November.. she said she can't have me spending g all that time moving stacks around d in the upcoming years. First idea was to put a tin tiny 3ft wide roof over the long stacks I have. These run parallel to my property line along the fence. I would use the existing poles I have to divide and help support the stacys to put a cross piece on and then two 2x4s parallel to the stack above out and then screw the tin to it...this basically would make a long single stack top covered wood shed. Then I talked about building g another wood shed to hold 2 years worth of wood. Then that idea morphed into one of those metal car ports. Heck for a hundred dollars or more over materials they come set it up for me!! Plus its bigger than I was thinking g anyway. Did my math and I could get 2 years worth under the 18x21fy canopy and still have an area 8ft the whole length of the canopy to out a work bench or to park other stuff or to back the at or truck into it to unload wood. Ranger that is not the K10. Any other thought on this. I think the original idea would honestly look good how I would do it, but the problem is that there is not enough linear space there for my wood needs which still leaves me buildingsome sort of shed. This is why iI am this kids g of just going f with the p made shelter built on site. They can be had installed for $700.
Give it a year and ur son will want to hang with you while youre doing whatever. Another year after that they start becoming slightly productive. In addition to helping move the smaller splits, my son now helps bring gear out with his power wheels tractor and his duties include being the one to yell "TIMBBURRRR!!" Any case, it gets both of you out of the house. Still, the carport idea sounds really nice. But if yours is anything like mine, SWMBO will make the final determination.
Clem, I totally understand your predicament. Only thing with mine is I didn't want to handle the splits anymore than I had to after they were on the drying racks, so on the racks they stay. I have limited space on my property so the rows of splits get top covered and they stay that way until it's ready to move to the covered porch in the fall. I guess I could consider my covered porch a wood shed of sorts. It's on the same level as the stove is and I can walk out in my pjs and slippers to get a days worth of wood and not have to change. All my wood is wheelbarrowed from place to place, I have no room for any other mechanical aids, so the wood gets plenty of hands on attention.
She has OKed anything I do to make it easierfor me. Well within reason. She says she likes the sheds iI build look better than a metal carport but just doing some rough figuring I may save $200 and I still have to build it which would take me 2 days probably. I do things to save money but in this situation seems like a no brainnner to me to buy the carport. Heck I did some figuring..the tin alone would cost me right at $200! Plus close to $100 for just posts, then there is all the structure...screws..probably need more nails for the draining nailer. More special treated screws bags of concretefor the posts the aad dons may make it closer than I think.? My wood shed is just a simple slant roof design. Roof is 12x16ish 3/4 full of wood and a side has various other stuff under it like a few saws weed eaters shovels etc. I would build the same for ease of construction, if I were to build.
CR those are great pics!! I have been contemplating what "kid saw" to get him. They have ryobi and hi sky and maybe a few others. The wife wants him to get one as well!!
I ordered a carport and will be using that primarily. For what your getting it's hard to beat the $700 price. I'm gonna leave enough space in the middle to drive an ATV through to load splits
The carport is a great idea. I almost did that and still may put one up. We have a neighbor who has one and it also partially covers his OWB. Works great.
Clem the simplest thing to do is simply lay a tarp over the top.. It works well. I do this and it is a stack it and forget it solution. The wood for the winter gets a bigger tarp that goes to the ground just before the snow flies then I don't need to move it more than once. When I cut more wood it fills the void left by the winter supply used up. Granted I am building a greenhouse and it will hold wood come winter but that's not a necessity it's an extra perk..
For $800, you couldn't build a wood she'd that big and that cheap. That's the cost with them erecting it. So you have no labor involved (unless you want concrete or have to level the land). The car port is a great idea. I have one ordered, but I have them holding off on building it (you only put 10% down then make the final payment the day it's constructed). I need to have the gas company get a ProPain tank out of the way. Otherwise I have to buy it if I make it inaccessible.
You can get the thinner side posts and its $700. I think the 14 gauge vs 12 gauge I have been getting old skidder tire tubes and cutting them to top cover stacks. But it still blows in on the sides and I usually only get 2 days wood up for use under cover in winter from shed so pulling from likes is problematic if I were to be pulling from a pile not under a shed. Remember I am in the south..we get rain usually not snow. Also the way its laid out now I dont have enough stacks to get 3 yrs a ahead just 2 which even with oak is fine in my climate but I want more!!!

Looks like those car ports y'all got have an extra how and standard bracing every bow as well. Posibbly for snow load?? There are many car ports around here with no corner braces. I have one of the RV covers like this. Its like 16x32x10 or something with a half a carport on the side. It was here when I bought the place.
I can't imagine those do well with wind? I keep my wood outside and bring 1/3 cord or so on the porch. Aside from sometimes needing shovel off a bit of snow on the top row or two its not really a problem.
I am interested in the carport idea myself. I stack my wood on racks that I can move with the forks on my tractor. I could fill a carport with a winter's worth of wood in a couple of hours, if that.
Since I have been in this house I have seen 60+ mph wind I guess. Big one has gone no where. I dont live in the middle of a field though. But around here every third house has one and almost every trailer does. The only ones you see flipped over after heavy winds are the same people that dont anchor it into the ground. My large shed had like 1" debate spikes down into the concrete pad that it sits on. It will sway side to side in wind but not come close to moving...if I had those 45 degree supports in the corners it wound not sway as bad. And here in the south 18-24 months is almost the max I can get on my wood not under cover. Even the top covered stuff there are punky pieces in the middle of the piles and some with fungus glueing multiple pieces togeather and others that are just dr rotting. I know some of y'all claim to let it sit stacked 3-5 years but I am just to worried that I will loose btu's as it rots away. I guess were just more humid and warmer longer. I know alaska doesnt have a rot problem nor does canada after seeing shows where they say how long downed trees have been there or like in alaska seeing old cabins that are just in a gravel bed on the ground. That would get you about 2 years before your lower log caved in from termites and rot!!
For some reason Massachusetts is $300 more than other states, Connecticut is cheaper and I live right on the border, wonder what that's all about.
