Had to pick up and deliver a small sugar maple for my friend yesterday. Same friend i processed the big Norway maple for back in June. You can see the stump behind it. I have those acorns i posted pics of a while back and may plant those too.
We've planted near 100 trees since we moved in 6/16. Probably about 50 are still strong. A few I designated as "Firewood Trees". Mel thinks I'm kidding... I will drop and burn the Silver Maples we planted on the West end of our property, probably the last few years before moving in another 25 years.
We have not planted trees for a long time now. When we cut off a bunch of pines several years ago we seriously considered planting a few hundred more pines where we too those off but so far we haven't. However, it is amazing how many new pines have come up on their own plus all the new oaks, compliments of the local squirrel population. Also lots of blackberries.
I planted some river birch and red plum trees this spring and next spring planning on planting a living fence row of some sort of pines for year long privacy. Also would like to put in crab apple, pear and apple trees for food plots in woods once I clear out the junk trees and under growth.
I planted six chestnuts, five survived 3 years now. Also probably eight dogwoods. None survived. Several various hardwoods and a few cypress in the woods of my woodlot, I don't think any have survived. I don't know why, could be deer ate them. They didn't eat my chestnut trees! But they were already six to eight feet tall. The others were about a foot tall. I will not plant any more dogwoods, even the three I bought that were about six feet tall did not survive. Now, this is AFTER they got established and survived a couple years. Dogwoods die a lot in nature and planted!
