Replacing baffle board on quadrafire

Ok, I realized my baffle board was getting bad, but not as bad as it really is. I swept my chimney last week, and I saw just how bad the baffle board is.

Quadrafire wants way too much for the replacement. I found other refractory board for much less.

The stock size is 1/2" thick by 18 7/16" x 12 5/16".

So as far as I see, if I get this...

And cut it down, I should be good, right?

Pretty sure this will work, I just want to run it by FHC to double check my thinking.

 

not sure about that, but if it's got that rating, should be ok.
I need to replace ours on the 30, but I'm trying to eke out a couple more months from the old ones.
If they didn't want my right leg and my left eyeball as payment, they'd be in the stove already.
I bought some refractory boards to replace the originals a couple years ago, and they were less than ESW wants, but haven't lasted.

Looks like the long dimension is slightly too short.

 

Yeah the stuff I found is rated high enough for temperature, and the size is larger than I need, so I can cut it down.

While looking, I found for the nc30 that was exact fit for yours for ~$50.

I'm pulling the trigger....

That one you linked, I saw that. It's for 2 sheets, FYI, although it won't make 1 longer.

 

For mine would be about $30 cheaper than ESW.
ESW has 'em on sale and they're still more......
I'm curious to know how well these work for you. They might be in my shopping cart if all goes well with yours (yes, you get to be the guinea pig).

 

I'll let you all know. This and the proper 5/8" Rutland rope door gasket will be here Friday. 55.56 total with prime.

 

Apparently this "superwool plus board" is an alternative to ceramic fiber board. Looks like many people have used it and give a good review. One guy even looks like he did what I'm doing and cutting it to fit a different stove.


Eh, I'll do it after work on Friday and fire it up as soon as I can afterwards. Gotta check how long the door gasket cement needs to cure. Cold weather and that four letter word is coming next week, so they say...

Did you find these guys for Quad parts?

I bought parts including a latch replacement from them. Their prices seem to be less than most others.

Yeah, I've seen them before, I just haven't bought anything from them yet. When I needed a new blower fan last year, I looked all over the place, and ended up mounting a similarly sized one from the aftermarket.

 

Amazon says the baffle board and door gasket were delivered. I let the stove go out this am.

 

I take it you're still at work?

What should I use to cut it? Fine tooth sawzall? I'd rather use a hand saw, but I am not using a fine cut woodworking saw on it.

Maybe I'll try a razor blade/ box cutter

That's how I cut the ones I got.
Your original is in worse shape than mine. A couple corners are missing, and it's beginning to spall from the heat.
Maybe I'll quit whining about mine, and keep it a while longer.

 

So that is ceramic insulation board with some sort of coating on it to make it harder/more durable?

 

Thats interesting. The baffle in my Quad has 20 years or so of near 24x7 use and it hasnt cracked at all. It does have quite a bit of erosion at the front edge but still sits on the tube. I wonder why yours cracked up and mine hasn't.

 

I moved mine after it was used, even if not a ton. From what I see, the ceramic board cures under a fired stove, and gets brittle. It went home in my trailer 70 miles or so, then I installed it on my house.

 

Now cleaning the old door gasket out. I got most of it out. I don't think all needs to come out, just almost all of it.

 

Remind me not to take my stove for a drive........

 

Yes. Basically. After it gets heated up, it burns off some coating from what I read.
