Who else has OCD when it comes to the final sort of firewood before it hits the stove? From left to right: Newspaper, pine and or hardwood kindling( I have 7 copy paper boxes filled right now), Larger rekindle from hot coals splits, splits that stay in rack all year just for show, regular split supply with big uglies in the back, and a tote of oak 1"s. What can I say, I have fun with my wood, I like it looking good and organized.
Oak, Beech and Black Locust gets picked out for long cold nights...or long rainy nights too. Doesnt really get much colder than 0°F around here.
Sometimes things get jumbled up for me because you get a score of that type of wood, another score of another type, some scores are small, some are bigger, some take 6 months to dry, some 12, some 2+ years, so keeping them racked and separated is a challenge sometimes. Right now I have Oak (white/red/willow/chestnut/), Maple, Cherry, Sassafras, Pine, and Mulberry. At some point you just have to start mixing them together or the racks will become outta control. But with that said I generally have a very good idea of what is what and on what rack. Not to mention my eye for the type of wood has gotten better over the years. I try to keep the hardwoods and oak separated because of drying time and burn times and the softer woods separated. Hardwoods for overnight burns and a mix generally for everything else. I'm like Dennis. Last year, I had 98% ash to burn, so that got loaded in the bin a half cord at a time. I then put a good sized pile of oak next to it for the really cold nights. That's about the extent of it for me.
I'm with Backwoods Savage. Oak is kept separate from mixed softwoods. Oh, then there's cones, bark and kindling. So, maybe not quite as OCD, but yes, I keep 'em separated. One of my favorites:
I only separate on my outside racks. It's simple - oak gets stacked by itself. All other are good to be mixed. Only deviation to that, is if I get a cord of one type. Then I'll stack by itself. To burn, I have 1/3 cord rack on my deck, and a bucket of kindling sticks.
Do the same here but with milk crates. Don't have to do any sorting as pine/maple/oak is segregated from the moment it is cut. Pine is usually a mix of split sizes but I have sat in the garage and made a big batch of small pine splits with the electric splitter or a hatchet. Lately I just have a box (in the house) of small pine branches as they are quick and easy to fetch/make. In less than an hour I can usually fill two barrels which last quite a while. Once burning becomes 24/7 there's not much need for much small kindling although a little makes life easy first thing in the morning.
I sort it in the basement. Not quite as OCD as the pics above LOL Small toss on the left is pine, tulip, catalpa and punky stuff. Shoulder wood. Larger toss on the right is mostly oak. I just grab whatever I’m in the mood for.
I don’t sort anything until it’s inside. I will dig through outside stacks for oak which never seems to be much of a problem. As far as kindling goes, when we reach a certain day, usually in early December, the fire stays lit Until March. That explains the two 55 gal drums full of the stuff. What can’t be explained is why I continue to add to the kindling.
I keep mine separated . From felling to the shed to the wood box by the stove. Although,,, Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference, takes a trained eye & some effort to get it sorted out
Oak and pine have there own piles. I'll mix cherry and apple because I cook with it. Everything else is sorted by when its split.
I put all the oak together. Oak snob. 3 year Oak lite's right up with a small piece of fire starter and a good chimney.
Hmm, I don't sort any of it. It all gets treated as if it's the same. This is a different level of FHC OCD I've not inherited yet.
These pics is all red n rock oak... This is rock oak,locust,hickory,cherry,n ash.... Mostly cherry n ash with some white oak n hickory... n what i need to torch this winter..ash,locust,hickory, some cherry n ginkgo... plus my uglies... when i get an offer to cut wood...it all goes together.....if it real cold...I'll separate as it comes off the stack...too hard to separate..
