When my honey and I got married in 1976, we rented a small house in Brewer for a couple years from a nice older couple, who lived next door. It was along the Penobscot and the views, and the times, sitting behind the house on the edge of the big cliff in the evenings, watching ships come up the river, planes on approach to Bangor right over us, trains behind us... all were good memories for decades. We were out driving around one fall day and I said, hey, lets go see our our old house in Brewer. We were excited to see the ole place. One surprise made even a better one... both of the 2 homes the older couple had owned, were gone! Where they were is now a public park! Complete with one bench waiting for us to return to enjoy it again. Nice of the city to keep this spot just for us huh? City spent a lot of $$$ doing it too. That bank used to be almost straight down and eroding badly. Those big maples were about 6"-10" back then. Nice spot.
It was then. Not so much now I'll bet. There's one house left right in the middle of 2 public parks. Daytime, no prob... at night, fuggett about it.
Are those fruit trees near the road there, or some other ornamental? Nice to see they left them. When the Feds took over more homes & acreage for the CVNRA (Cuyahoga Valley Nat Rec Area) here they not only removed the homes, but also removed every non-native tree anyone had planted. Spending our tax dollars of course!
Those kinda memories are so good. I sometimes find them bittersweet when you visit old home areas and find them changed. Yours looks like a beautiful spot. Thanks for sharing that - this post sent me down memory lane.
I hear that. Last time I went past my childhood place, I was appalled. I wouldn't go back now if you paid me........well, maybe if you paid me and provided a tank to drive. Nice pics.
Memory Lane. Often full of surprises. We went back to our fist home. It is just outside of Riverside Ca, we had a small house trailer in a small park. We were surround by very aromatic orange groves. To our surprise, the mobile home park was now very run down. Trash everywhere. The orange groves were gone. Now, the road is lined with retail stores, and the backside is now housing. Everything crammed in on postage size lots. I wouldn't take a picture because I preferred our first memory of the place. On a high note, the military chapel where we were married was still there and well maintained. It was just the same as I remembered in '69.
Looks like those are apple trees and they were not there before cause there were 2 houses there. So, they're about 30 plus yrs.
That's a great story bro! Our first place was literally in the slums it was 700 sq ft and $300 a month and that included utilities..... We went back not long ago and the other 15 apartment buildings are still there but ours had burned to the ground. For being a slum we still had good memories from it. There is a small park down the road and the big Grand River that we used to go walk and fish at it is a beautiful park too..
