I burn in a Hampton insert with automatic blower. Very efficient and heats entire house. With the door closed and blower working I can’t hear the crackle of the burn. To rectify this I burn with my glass door open when I’m sitting in the room so I can enjoy the sound. A few guys I know with stoves don’t, and I think they are missing out on one of the best parts of the fire. Obviously when I’m not in the room or go to bed the glass door is shut Anyone else on my plan?
Doesn't sound like an efficient nor environmentally friendly manner of operating a wood heating appliance. Although some stoves used to come with an 'aesthetics screen' . Does your stove/chimney smoke in that mode ?
Hamster, I’ve heard that people do this because their wood isn’t seasoned all the way. You just want to hear the crackle?
Parents used to have a Vermont Castings stove that had the front cage. Made it easier to hear and enjoy but honestly that stove needed better wood. Burned those presto/duraflame logs in there and that was my brother and I as kids. Moved to the basement now, not hooked up. Makes me want to use it but since it’s a double door, it’s not EPA. If you want crackle fires, find pine or doug fir. For sure they crackle and pop. Hardwoods aren’t common for that so much.
Once in a blue moon ill do that. I leave door open when i have a pile of coals to let them dissipate and heat radiate til i add more wood When im watching the fire ill burn only a couple splits with the draft up more to enjoy the flame. I agree as i miss the crackling. Just dont ever try to use the remote to change the channel on the insert. Ive been known to do this when im half asleep!
Hey that needs a log shift and an exploding pop with a shower of sparks every now and then to keep you awake.
I had that vermont casting defiant when i first bought my house and it had the cage too. She took huge splits but became really inefficient. Wife didnt like it cus you couldnt see the fire if you didnt use the cage. I bought her a stove with a giant viewing glass and we love it.
My old stove before I got the Buck stove had solid doors but we had a screen and I used it every Christmas morning while we opened gifts. The Buck has a glass door but it is still not quite the same.
I’ll have to take a few pictures, the fire box isn’t big. Few splits and it’s full. I agree that it’s a bit of a bummer when you can’t see the fire. Too good of entertainment.
If i remember it took like 24 inch logs and had a top loader also so you just dropped em in and packed it. Thats when i was into the large splits ( all nighters) i dont use that large of splits anymore i feel like the medium sizes burn better. I do use alot of unsplit round logs as big as a duraflame log and i put acouple those in the back at night.
Yup, that’s like my parents old one too. Dropped those logs in the top. Little messy that way... dangerous spark potential. I’m almost tempted to try out it’s function again, drier wood and figure if there’s a way to close off some gaps in the doors. But heavy. Hm would be great for a shop though.
My Woodstock is in the dining room and since it's my main source of heat it's very rare that the door gets opened for the crackle and pops. I do understand the idea behind it but it's just not something I would do. However, I do enjoy watching the fire through the glass, especially on a cold winters night when I just finished a reload. I'll sit at the table with a beer of course and enjoy the heat.
