I say hickory as well. Pignut variety. Great score. Scored a truck and a half this past week myself and shagbark to boot.
Man that is great, I will have to get the rest of it then. Is it as stringy to split as Shagbark hickory?
Burn some. Sniff it. Smells like bacon? Hickory! Jealous of all the hickory posts. I've only ever come across it once, before we had an indoor stove, and burned everything in the owb that I didn't save for cooking. Still have some kicking around in the smoker stack!
Could be tough could be easy. I hand split so that is how i rank it. Cut a 14" DBH bitternut hickory recently and it halved in almost one whack. I was splitting the shag easier then i thought on Thursday afternoon. Pic of shag from Thursday.
I guess I will find out soon enough. I have a hydraulic splitter, I don’t have the desire to hand split anymore.. I respect people that split by hand.
Same, I do split by hand but usually when I know the wood is extremely hard to split, the hydro splitter is your best bet and I know I bought a good thing. Had I ..knot... I would’ve been full of this wood that wouldn’t be split right. Just helps out a lot and some nerve stuff while hand splitting will happen if it’s done in a constant manner. Whacking at knots all day long had proved uncomfortable later at bedtime. Nice score with your hickory there, I’d be the same way with that and any oak I find, makes it kinda exciting that you can use it to keep warm or use on the bbq or both. If I were smoking or grilling with it, small piece splits are fun to do.
Yeah that's definitely hickory. Great score! Yeah sometimes it's stringy, sometimes not. I don't have any experience with pignut, but I know that most times with hickory, I'm glad I have hydros to split it.
Thanks, yes knots are not forgiving on the body. I noodle bigger rounds if needed instead of splitting on site
So far all the shagbark hickory I have run into was extremely stringy like elm, took a full cycle with the splitter.. hopefully this stuff splits easier
The big halves of the shag trunk halved fairly easy for me using the log blaster. The upper parts had knots and gnarl. Noodled those to load and rather than kill myself trying to split, ill noodle them to fireplace size as well. After a few whacks and it wont go the Stihl to the rescue!
